Sanitation Commissioner As "The Goat Of The Storm"

Blizzard picture by @brianelmquist, remixed by Andrew Creamers, further remixed by Gothamist, with Sanitation Commissioner John Doherty as the "Goat of the Storm" and cameo from Deputy Mayor Stephen Goldsmith as the "Dark Lord of the Storm"

Ask and ye shall receive! Sanitation Commissioner John Doherty spoke to the NY Times about the beating he's been getting for the city's response to the blizzard, which is fast becoming the storm that the city screwed up. Noting how the press has made a big deal about how his crews failed and how his own Staten Island block was plowed, Doherty said, "I keep waiting for the picture to be in the paper with the goat’s horns sticking out of my head, like I’m the goat of the storm. We got a black eye. I think my reputation, and the reputation of the department, has been seriously tarnished."

Doherty admitted that he had to hire non-Sanitation Department help to dig his car out ("very embarrassing"). However, Doherty is determined "to go out there and work hard and get our reputation back." (The article looks at his background and experience, working his way through the ranks of the Sanitation Department.) And he doesn't think crews slowed down on purpose, "The only time you’re going to be a hero in this department is when there’s a snowstorm. This is the battle we have to win. It didn’t work out." Some former city officials say the city should have called a snow emergency while others believe that Doherty's department is being micromanaged by Deputy Mayor Stephen Goldsmith.

So many anti-Semites in this world. This hatred is pathetic.

  • Yahtzee

You keep calling me an Anti-Semite with nothing to refute my arguments.

Argue my facts...not the fact that the people who I'm criticizing happen to be Jewish.

  • blink667

Dude, you're going up against an even bigger cult than Scientology that uses similar dirty tactics. Reason doesn't enter into this equation; just give it up.

  • nolastname

WHY, was a "snow emergency" not called BEFORE the snow hit the ground?
It's not like Bloomie observes Christmas.

  • Yahtzee

Oh jesus here we go...please don't associate my criticism of Bloomberg's Jewish cronyism with the above comment.

  • nolastname

You cap Jewish and not Jesus.?????

  • Guest

Calling it "Jewish cronyism" [sic] is totally biased. Bloomberg may give preferential treatment to his friends and business partners, but not because they are Jewish. If some of his friends happen to be Jewish so be it. Their religion of heritage is irrelevant unless you just don't like Jews. Besides how about Kelly, Black, Cassano, Doherty etc. Not one is Jewish. If anything, being a Jew gets you discriminated against in this country.

Klein, Doctoroff, Loeser, Goldsmith...with Stu Pinsky-- head of the EDC and David Frankel commish of the Dept. of Finance. The latter two arguably the most important & corrupt as far as sweetheart contract and real estate deals in the city. How about you look up Joel Bondy?

I find it funny how you mention Black in the same sentence as Kelly, Cassano, and Doherty. Three men who rose through the ranks of their respective agencies...and a Bloomberg crony. They wield positions in agencies that have nothing to do with Bloombergs personal finance.

In March 2009, Forbes reported Michael Bloomberg's wealth at $16 billion, a gain of $4.5 billion since the previous year, which makes him one of the most successful billionaires in the United States during the recession, and a person enjoying the world's biggest increase in wealth in 2009.[17] At that time, there were only four fortunes in the U.S. that were larger (although the Wal-Mart family fortune is split among four people). Bloomberg moved from 142nd to 17th in the Forbes list of the world's billionaires in only two years (March 2007 - March 2009).

    All during a recession.

Really??? You want to argue with this? He's not using his position as mayor and his cronies to increase personal wealth?

  • nolastname

OK, I reread your comment. Your last sentence sounds so backward you must be talking out of your.....

  • nolastname

Yes, he did not call a snow emergency because it was CHRISTmas.
Not because they are Jewish, because they are rich.
Seems most of the rich round these parts are Jews.

I think this pretty much sums up the man and his reasons for wanting to be mayor. Steering contracts to companies he is invested in and sweetheart real estate deals. He's a piece of shit shyster plain and simple.

  • There is bloods on the sanitation union thugs hands

  • Rod

but the man who SUPERVISES them and controls their work performance completely does NOT have blood on his hands?

    nice try, liar.

if it was a slowdown, that's the MAYOR's fault b/c he's in charge.

if there was no slowdown, that's the MAYOR's fault b/c he's in charge.

    SHUT UP TROLL.

  • It's not the mayors fault at all, he is trying to do what is right for the city and taxpayers by cutting back on those union salaries which is making the city bankrupt. Hate to break it to you, but the union thugs have blood on their hands

  • Ph

If he was doing what was right for the city he could have, oh I don't know, declared a snow emergency when he saw it coming right at him and handled it better?

Oh I forgot, the Mayor of New York City is absolutely neutered when faced with the awe inspiring power of some garbage men making 30K a year.

I really want tickets to the planet you live on. The faux-populist schitzo anger is delicious!

  • No, its $70,000 annually without overtime which boosts them over the six figure mark......get your facts straight

  • Ph

After how many years on the job?

    And yes, that matters.

Edit: Like, i really want you to go and look up the steps for the actual dollar amount per year. All public employee salaries are listed like that and the info is open to the public.

  • Yahtzee

    Here is the deal.

Stephen Goldsmith was bought in by the mayor for this exact reason. To fall on the sword during the third term so Bloomberg can keep his political aspirations alive. He can decimate services and pensions, while showing a small monetary improvement for the city. We all suffer. He takes heat for Bloomberg. Bloomberg can say the budget was fixed on his watch.

In this case it's actually funny b/c he doesn't need to fall on a sword. The already fervently anti-union Post was fed this story and ran with it. It was easy to spin as a revenge story, due to the cuts Goldsmith already made to the DSNY. So instead of our Deputy Mayor of Ops taking the heat, people are looking to crucify garbagemen. GARBAGE MEN!

In the end, just like Dan Doctoroff and the rest of Bloomberg's (sorry to say it but all Jewish) cronies, Goldsmith will be set up with a job paying hundreds of thousands of dollars. If not directly employed by Bloomberg Media, (Doctoroff was named president of Bloomberg L.P. after leaving NYC govt.) it will be another corporation where our Napoleonic egomaniac of a mayor has his slimy tentacles.

  • Rod

i'm no anti-semite, but HOW do you explain that almost eveyrone Bloomberg hires is JEWISH?

    DO EXPLAIN.

IS IT BECAUSE ASIANS JUST DON'T DO WELL ON TESTS OR EDUCATION LIKE JEWISH PEOPLE DO?

Or could it be that our mayor is a super racist?

There's no argument here. the mayor is a super racist.

  • GentleGiant

You were doing so well until you got anti-semitic for no reason whatsoever.
