Jets Fined $100K By NFL For TripGate

In the wake of Rex Ryan's FootGate situation (which just continues getting awkward), everyone's completely forgotten about TripGate from a couple weeks ago, an actual football-related scandal. Jets conditioning coach Sal Alosi admitted to intentionally tripping a Miami Dolphins player, and was fined $25,000 and suspended without pay for the rest of the season by the team. Now, the NFL has fined the Jets team $100,000 because of the incident. The fine takes into account special teams coordinator Mike Westhoff's public comments accusing other teams of employing similar tactics. So basically, the team got fined the equivalent of two Brett Favre penis photos.

  • So, let me just crunch the numbers...the Jets are worth about a billion dollars...bring in hundreds of millions of dollars a year...so a fine of a hundred thousand dollars is...meaningless? Is that how it works? I don't follow sports, but it seems to me like this isn't a very steep fine?

That's pretty much how it works. Though, instead of the valuation which you have about right (Forbes says the Jets are worth $1.1 billion), I'd use annual income. That's $238 million.

So a fine of $100,000 is just over 0.04% -- four hundredths of a per cent -- of their annual income.

So is it a deterrent? Let's say you make $60,000 a year, and like to drive fast. Would the threat of a $25 fine deter you from speeding? Same ratio.

Just a small point about your ticket analogy..The real weight behind movers is the points they carry, not the actual fine amount. If it was only say 150 bucks for a speeding ticket and nothing else, that wouldn't be much of a hit if you only got one ticket every few years, the problem comes with the point bump which can push your premiums up several hundred dollars a year for the five years it takes for the ticket to drop off the system.

I don't think there's an analogue for the NFL.
