72,000 Pounds Of Food Didn't Go To Waste

Need to warm up? This story should give you the warm fuzzies (sorry). City Harvest reports (via their Facebook) that "FreshDirect donated approximately 72,000 pounds of food this week after Monday’s snowstorm brought business to a halt on the East Coast." The food would have gone undelivered and to waste otherwise. This is a photo from this morning's 1,000 pound drop off at the Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen in Chelsea.

Quite a gesture for the needy and the planet. Now if 300 million flagellating Americans would stop wasting food like it was the last days of the Roman Empire we might be getting somewhere.

You should see how much food Army bases waste. Perfectly good, packaged food and no one is allowed to take it home.

While it's nice to assume altruism, a cynic would point out that this is also a business decision based on the bottom line. 36 tons of spoiled food would have racked up incredible hauling and dumping fees to get rid of it.

Good thing you're not a cynic!
