Powder Problems Plague Plows—Are You Snowed In?

Seriously, you don't want to be driving today. Reports are coming in steadily from across town that many streets are still not plowed and, to make matters worse, many of the city's 1,700 snow plows are stuck in drifts throughout the five boroughs (sigh). But don't worry, Mayor Bloomberg promises it'll all be cleaned up soon enough and that despite our budget woes the city has the money to pay for everything (related: did you know snow cleanup generally costs the city $1 million per inch?).

In the meantime, we've noticed a lot of people just giving up on the sidewalks altogether and walking in the middle of the streets where the drifts are smaller. Is that happening everywhere?

And how is the snow on your block? Have you been plowed? Let us know in the comments or via e-mail (tips@gothamist.com) and we'll try and work up a map later today. And if you've got any good photos of snow traffic, please do send them our way (photos@gothamist.com) or tag them "Gothamist" on flickr.

  • I'm out in Far Rockaway and I think the snow on our street will be there until March. Upstate is way better; they'd never let the snow still be on the ground this long after the storm. This is just a regular occurrence for them; they're more PREPARED for snow in the winter. So is every smaller city around the entire Eastern Seaboard. I'm glad I'm applying for state government jobs in Albany. Winter is easier to handle if you're properly prepared for it.

  • I'm in Sheepshead Bay. The avenues are mostly plowed. All the side streets are pretty much untouched.

Avenues W,X and Y were untouched until 5:30 this morning.
You must mean Ave Z is plowed for the busses that were not running.

    What about the bike lanes?

  • aloveston

A lot of the East Village streets are still unplowed.

  • I'm by Maimonides hospital between Boro Park and Sunset Park...most of the streets are not plowed...and there are two B11 buses in the middle of the streets, just stuck there along with cars.

I am in Far Rockaway, Queens and our streets have yet to be paved!! What's going on. My mom and aunt had to leave their car and walk home.

Upstate NY has a name for days like today. They call it Monday.

  • Kreo

I hear you guys in upstate have sex with animals on your snowy farms.

  • Boston and the rest of New England, too.

My block in Queens isn't plowed but that's due to car being stuck since 3 AM. Me and a neighbor helped get it unstuck.

  • I'm in Park Slope and everything was shut down. No cars moving anywhere. 15th/PPW was barely plowed through, I'm guessing since it's a bus route, but 14th definitely wasn't. Lots of people walking in the street.

I live in Spanish Harlem and my block isn't plowed. The sidewalks are a mess, as the business owners who didn't come in today didn't shovel their areas. Not that there is any place to put the snow.

  • Queens is pretty bad from what my friends have been telling me/tweeting. Abandoned buses and cars line the street. They have yet to see a plow.

  • jibbly

Northern blvd in flushing/bayside was plowed but not well. Side streets are pretty much snowed in. Blocks lucky enough with a neighbor owning a blower at least have clear sidewalks.

  • neuroradical

    Similar in brooklyn

  • CorlearsHook

Wow and I thought it was bad on Canal Street this morning, at least I was able to walk in the street.

  • freddynyc

How is it looking in Queens? Hope you guys aren't treated like the bastard stepchild of yore...

  • A million dollars an inch. Even if the cost was a tenth of that it's too much. And it's mainly so people can drive their cars.

Would cut our costs drastically if sanitation only had four foot wide bike lanes to clear.
