Cop Kicked Out Of Brooklyn After Ticketing Jaywalking Rabbi

12RABBIE1110.jpg The unidentified NYPD police officer that slapped Rabbi Sholom Emert with a jaywalking ticket on Shabbos has now been transferred to a less Jewish Orthodox community, reports the Flatbush Scoop. The ticket was handed over in the Midwood section of Brooklyn on November 26th, and Emert said the officer was rude when he busted him. Specifically, he made him write his own name down—thus forcing him to violate Jewish law on the Sabbath, lest he end up in the station.

According to the Daily News, the officer has been transferred to the 25th Precinct in East Harlem. Brooklyn Councilman David Greenfield, who was calling for the officer's suspension, says, "There was no reason to force this observant Jew to violate the Sabbath by forcing him to write."

    Transfer him to Flushing's 109. He'll get a quota-busting bonus!

I'm surprised the offending officer wasn't charged with a hate crime

  • WetButt

Well, lesson learned. For any cop working in a borough with a big Jewish community, if you're looking for a transfer, actually enforce the laws when these people break them and behold as you are quickly whisked away to work someone else!

  • Reading comprehension fail. No one is disputing the ticket.

Is it me or ppl here cant read and understand English very well?! The issue was freedom of religion which this police officer didn't respect and broke the law by preventing this right. Thank god that we have this freedom and any freedom we've got. When was the last time you saw cop jaywalking anyone anyway? Mmmm... Hey I jaywalking from time to time (hello NYC) and I bet that most of us here as well (don't pretend being a St. please) there is always more than it looks like I guess. I am glad that no one is jaywalking us with pork maybe then the Muslims would have gone mad for that... or how about drinking wine... the alcoholics would have jaywalking all over the place - lol.

Religious freedom doesn't trump the law. Your religion might say it's okay to beat your wife and children if they disobey you but the law says otherwise and you are are liable to arrest and prosecution if you break the law. The cop did nothing wrong.

@Ktinnyc: I guess I will have to speak English. The only wrong thing that the cop has done is to FORCE this person to sign on his holly day, while by law any person who get a ticket do not have/must sign (for your information as well for the next time when you will get a ticket) Now is that more clear for you what this article is about. And FYI - any beginner know that. All they do is filling out the next sentence "refused to sign". Get it? - Got it.. Good.

  • They almost always create accidents when they cross the streets like animals.

  • They?

  • I think he means "you people."

Yes, it's happening all over. Now maybe people will start to understand why the Times is suing the NYPD for failing to provide information.

  • Religion is hilarious.

Let's all start wearing 19th century period costumes and flagrantly ignore the law.

  • cr17

You're referring to the cop, right?

But seriously, that dude appears to be wearing a trench coat.

  • cr17

You're referring to the cop, right?

  • No one is saying he shouldn't be ticketed for jaywalking; they are saying the cop shouldn't have made him violate his religious prescription against work. Two different things. I don't think the cop should have been suspended, but transferring him seems like a smart choice.

Minority in trouble?....Never fear Mordicai to the rescue!...again.
