Hot 97 Deejay Thinks All Haitians Have HIV?

Hot 97 DJ Cipha Sounds is the latest radio personality to say something dumb on air. During his Friday morning show last week, the deejay told listeners, "The reason I'm HIV negative is because I don't mess with Haitian girls." So, yeah, the Haitian community is not happy, and now they, as well as local leaders, are calling for him to be fired.

The 34-year-old, whose real name is Luis Diaz, apologized after the station started getting calls—the full video is below, where he says: "I made a stupid, tasteless joke that was a one-liner that was taken totally the wrong way. I want to say sincerely that I apologize." How would that comment be taken the right way?

For now Diaz still has his job, but a coalition of Haitian community leaders are planning a rally outside of the Hot 97 headquarters on Hudson Street tomorrow at 11 a.m.

I am Haitian American woman and I want to tell you that your comment is very ignorant. Being on the air is a privilege. You have an opportunity to make an impact on the world. Instead you choose to spread hate. HIV is a very serious disease and nothing to joke about. There are many young adults, seniors in America alone affected by this disease. They have to live with it, with the same, the pain. In addition tragedy just hit Haiti earlier this year. At a time when we should be celebrating our President being bi-racial you are spreading stereotypes that hurts and alienate people as oppose to unifying and educating people. So much for a "teachable" moment. "I don't have HIV because I use condoms and refuse to engage in risky sex acts" would have sounded so much better, but as usual with these types ignorance prevails.
