Video: New PETA Ad Puts Dogs In Body Bags

PETA has a new commercial out, in which they ask: If you buy a dog, what will you do with the shelter dog you kill? Apparently the answer is that you'll carry it around in a body bag and have a grand ol' Weekend at Bernie's time with it. Which may or may not be what PETA does with its own animals.

  • doesn't PETA kill more animals than they try to get adopted? About 2000+ every year?

  • JaneJaneJane

Yep, and the reason is their precious, ridiculous, completely unreasonable adoption requirements. Them, the ASPCA, the Humane Society, etc.

I tried to get a dog for months at these places and here's what I was up against:

"You can't have this dog unless you work from home."
"You can't have this dog unless you have zero other pets."
"You can't get this dog if you're ever *thinking* of moving or having children."
"You can't get this dog unless we talk to your landlord." (Never mind that this is NYC and most landlords don't speak English)

There was so much red tape and bureaucracy and stupid restrictions created by people putting their own human opinions onto the animals. ("He can't be alone during the day because he has anxiety issues." Oh really? Did he tell you that while he was licking his anus?)

I wound up adopting a dog from a small locally-run shelter that made me fill out 1 page of paperwork, do a brief personal interview, and that's it. I was in and out of there in a half hour. The result? I love my dog. My dog loves me. Everyone's happy. The big organizations would do well to learn from the small ones.

I think the idea about not buying a purebred dog is that you don't perpetuate the pet shops who support shitty breeders and puppy mills. For the life of me I don't understand why anyone would prefer a purebred animal... but then I am a complete lunatic in the eyes of most as I'd say the same for "purebred" children.

There are just way too many being pumped out.

  • handsomedevil

Meh, if you deal directly with a reputable hobbyist you can be pretty confident that your dog was made in a humane and sustainable way. I still know my dogs breeder and she knows me. We see each other at events all the time so my dog gets to see her parents.

My beef with this line of thinking is that it jumps over all the DIRECT reasons the dogs are in the shelters. How is it that you "kill" the dog by not adopting it, but the idiot who didn't bother to fix their dog or bought one and abandoned it or whatever isn't even worth mentioning? Somebody else is directly responsible for that dog being in a shelter, and it ain't me.

  • If we are going to be technical, this is a no-win situation. If you adopt a dog, a purebred dog dies; if you do buy a purebreed, a shelter dog dies. Even if everyone adopted a shelter dog, there would always be more dogs. PETA needs to realize that some prefer to get what they are willing to pay for and be happy that someone is giving an animal a home.

If only they were as concerned about unborn human beings.

  • JaneJaneJane

You sound like a real joy to have at an office Christmas party.

  • By that logic every political organization on earth should be concerned about nothing but fetuses. It's not like there aren't a crapload of anti-abortion groups out there...

Wait, did I just expect ides to use logic? Nevermind.

  • ides_of_march

You're actually right in a way. All those people in those political organizations you mentioned have no need to be concerned, they've already been born, they all made it out of their mothers alive. Future generations, sorry but you guys are on your own.

  • Dead Himmler

It's funny how concerned you are about the unborn but have a lack of true compassion for actual people.

  • ides_of_march

"Lack of true compassion" indeed. That's just what liberal drama queens say about anybody who dares disagree with them about anything.
