New Neighborhood Name: CanDo!

dowisetrepla1210.jpg While it's not as ridiculous as Dowisetrepla (short for: Downwind of the sewage treatment plant), the latest neighborhood name is a close second... and as opposed to its competition it's real. According to the Daily News, a city marketing group is trying to make CanDo happen. The name is short for Canal Downtown, and the would-be rebrander—Clive Burrow, chairman of the Lower Manhattan Marketing Association—says, "By packaging it, by giving it the feel of a neighborhood like SoHo, then you're giving the whole area a pizzazz." (It is unclear at this time if Burrow displayed jazz hands while saying this.)

The name wouldn't replace already established neighborhood nicknames downtown—like TriBeca—rather it would "distinguish that section of the city from what [Burrow] considers uptown (above 59th St.), midtown (between 59th and 23rd Sts.) and downtown (23rd to Canal Sts.)."

Can he do it? One local concierge in on Church Street told the paper, "I'm strongly opposed to the new name. This area already has a name, and that's the Financial District." Yawn, where's the pizzazz in that?

RAMBO (Right After the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) is still my favorite. "Oh you live in DUMBO? Yeah well, I fucking live in g-damn RAMBO. So suck it."

The only time I've enjoyed these name contractions is in Hollywood. North Hollywood = NoHo and West Hollywood = WeHo. But that wasn't a real estate marketing thing. My friends and I were just juvenile.

Like when Far West Chelsea used to be WareHo, for warehouses and ho's. That, of course, has changed.

Oh man that's as bad as SoYo (aka South Yonkers art distract Fuck Yeah!)

On another note, if you're not in real estate its so hard to make one of these phrases catch on.

I've been saying the phrase West Bushwick for the a good 10 years now - and yet still no love, and you know it makes sense.
The area contained within the borders East of Montrose Ave - South of the Newton Creek/Queens Border/Wyckoff Ave - North of Broadway - West of Myrtle == West Bushwick.

Nothing a solid punch in the face can't fix.
Next time you overhear something saying FiDi or CanDo, simply put them in their place by politely announcing that your about to punch them square between the eyes. Then follow through.

Also, nice HIMYM reference :) great episode

The brokers can keep inventing new names, and the rest of us can keep ignoring them. The cosmic ballet goes on.

  • Just Me

    Give me a break.
So tired of these corny names.

Agreed. SoHo works because it's South of Houston, along with other reasons. & If London has one, why can't we.

CanDo? Really? That's dummer than the 'Linc' shit they tried to pull West of Hell's Kitchen

  • Just Me

    Seriously!

    Linc
    BoCoCa
    SpaHa
    FiDi
    DoBro
    SoBro

    Stupid brokers.
