DOE Announces Additional 14 School Closures

120810bus.jpg The DOE added 14 more public schools to the list of schools it plans to close by the end of the year, bringing the total number of closures up to 26. The schools all seem to have below-average graduation rates, but NY1 notes that almost all of them have seen poverty rates and number of homeless students increase recently. Public hearings on the closures begin in January, and UFT President Michael Mulgrew reluctantly said, "At least they're answering questions this time and going to the schools to try to figure things out ahead of time." Progress!

I attended a contentious school meeting yesterday which was in essence a pissing match for space between the two separate schools housed in one building.

I hope the DOE is smart enough to already have in place plans to move a couple of the newer schools which are currently sharing space with an existing school to these soon to be vacant buildings.

But its probably unfair to expect that sort of foresight from the DOE.

I like this! If the school brings the overall city graduation number down, you close it!

It is obviously not the case that the students attending these schools clearly need more help, attention, and funding. We're finally bringing cold economic rationality to education. No more wasting precious city money on kids that are clearly stupid. About time!
