New Study: NYC's Not Very Smart

HOMERnyc1210.jpg New York City, our brainpower index is only 0.771. We don't even know what that number means, but according to this Portfolio study, someone in Boulder, Colorado may be able to enlighten us—their brainpower index is 3.941! Basically, Portfolio made up some silly list and put it into a stupid PDF and posted it online and it says that we aren't even in the top 25 brainiest cities in the country. We come in at #36 (of 200), behind places like Trenton, New Jersey and Provo, Utah! La la la, we're just going to ignore this sham study and go with the one that came out in October that ranked us at #10. [via the Hairpin]

NYC has bad high school dropout rates, and about 2/3rds of those entering the city university system have to take remedial classes.

    Plus, there's Queens.

Well THIS study says that New York has been KILLING it in the last decade when it comes to brains.

    http://www.urbanophile.com/201...

"Manhattan increased its density of people with college degrees by 7,500 people per square mile in the last decade. That’s just the increase in density of just people with college degrees. That’s more than the total population density of most cities in the United States."

    Suck it, Utah!

    Of course you will.

The average person in NYC is stupider than the average person in Trenton?
Intellectually, we can kick Boulder, Trenton, and all other city's asses!

Okay, so maybe we're not Boulder, Colorado. But the good news? We're not Boulder, Colorado!

I wonder what the results would be for Manhattan alone... the B&T riff-raff is bringing us down!

  • randomtransplant

...Yet the metro reigion is 8.5 million NYC'ers surrounded by 30 million people who left for better public schools, mostly from the outer boroughs.

The B&T riff raff brings you down because they out compete you.

Or maybe it doesn't take too much brainpower to be a banker.

I don't know if it's true today but they used to say that Huntsville, Alabama had the highest per capita concentrations of PhDs. Rocket science > finance.

  • tijuanatornado

Because there are only bankers in Manhattan, right?

And not 1 banker has a PhD in Physics, Math, Econ or a hard science, right?

  • EastRiver

I didn't imply that at all. You're dragging down our score with your terrible reading comprehension and lack of logic.

  • Me fail english? That's unpossible!

  • MTA and post office employees bring the average WAAAY down

  • You mean to tell me that the teenage girl I overheard on the subway discussing terminating a pregnancy by drinking a lot of vodka isn't smart?

  • Stevennnn

Too many dumb and wasteful studies.

  • Dead Himmler

    WTF!!! I resemble that remark

  • Now I'm just confused.
