Poll: Where is New York's 6th Borough?

escapenyc1110.jpg If New York had to pick a 6th borough (or find a replacement for Staten Island if they ever secede), where would it be? A classic pick is Philadelphia, and more recently there's been CRAZY TALK of Cleveland, Ohio becoming a destination for priced-out New Yorkers. In fact, we received many personal messages from ex-New Yorkers living over there, singing its praises as the nation's "best kept secret."

Before Cleveland, there was talk of Jersey City, Atlanta, and even Yonkers as being contenders for the coveted title—they've all garnered press as the latest migration trend (as have the suburbs, and Kansas City). So, if we're going to extend a prestigious 6th Borough title upon one of them, which should it be?

  • You're all worng it should be long island I think we all know that. well some of us. Ya ya they say it is but its not. it should be

  • The only thing that should visit Cleveland is an atom bomb.

  • The Lower East Side has been known as the "6th boro" for a long time. That's what the "6" means when you see it on these t-shirts that are going around in the neighborhood.

No, it hasn't. Perhaps that stems from confusion with the "6th Ward", which was the municipal voting district of that part of the city in the 19th century. It's mentioned in books like "The Gangs of New York," though I don't remember if there was a similar reference in the movie by that name.

If that's not what the t-shirt designers (or wearers) mean, I'd guess they're not actually from NYC.

Sixth Borough? That would make no sense, because... well, it's already in a borough, you know?

Doesn't a borough have to be sort of semi- attached to the other ones. Or at at least on the other side of a river? I think it'd be Hoboken in that case.

Drew Carey started this Ohio thing ya know. LOL

    Miami.

This poll was clearly devised by someone who lives in Jersey City.

  • How come Jersey City is ahead? I thought the idea of moving to New Jersey was to get away from New York.

  • BettyDavis

That's the excuse they use instead of admitting that they can't afford to live in NYC but deep down they all want in.

The out of town midwestern yuppies on the waterfront, maybe. The rest of Jersey City could give fuck all about being the 6th borough of anything.

There's nothing to do in Cleveland except masturbate and cry.

That's what I think about Jersey City.

Yonkers was originally supposed be be incorporated into Greater New York City but they declined the invitation. If there really were a spiritual sixth borough, Yonkers would be it.

  • As far as I'm concerned, four boroughs is plenty.

"Cleveland, Ohio becoming a destination for priced-out New Yorkers. In fact, we received many personal messages from ex-New Yorkers living down there"

"Down there"? Really, you don't know where Cleveland is?

In fact, it's at a latitude north of NYC, roughly as far north as Connecticut. Some people in Cleveland like to say they live on the "North Coast."

  • spiritross

Glad to see Yonkers on that list - should get more votes, but most people on here don't even know what Yonkers is, let alone how it is the true extension of NYC and has a art community that puts most to shame.

Hell, its more of a borough than Satan Island
