Ice Pick Mugger Strikes Twice At Stuy Town

2010_12_icepick2.jpg A day after the police released images of an ice pick- and knife-wielding man who robbed four women in the Bronx and Manhattan, the suspect apparently struck two more times yesterday. Police believe that the same man is behind the muggings of two women in Stuyvesant Town. City Councilman Daniel Garodnick, who lives in the complex, told the Post, "This guy is really sick. Residents should be extremely vigilant when entering their buildings."

The suspect's MO is to approach women who are walking into their buildings. In yesterday's attacks—one on a 40-year-old at 17 Stuyvesant Oval at 3:15 p.m., then one on a 32-year-old woman at 525 East 14th Street minutes later—the "suspect was scoping out his marks while lurking outside the building and pretending to talk on his cell phone," according to the Post's sources. He managed to take their money, plus one victim's phone and the other's jewelry. Stuy Town residents were worried; one told WCBS 2, "Because we have no doormen, and because for reasons unknown to me the doors are open, you can just walk in the building. I mean, they are just propped open."

The suspect's previous victims were in Co-Op City in the Bronx and at Stuy Town's neighboring complex, Peter Cooper Village. He is described as being in his 40s, around 6' and 250 pounds, with a close-cut beard. People with information should contact NYPD CrimeStoppers.

There's no way for people in the city to defend themselves, and that's scary.

If someone comes at you with an ice pick in the city...your only defense is to call the police and wait. I'm sure he'll sit tight.

An ice pick? It'd easier to find a gun.
