Something About PA Cop's Overtime Just Doesn't Add Up

112910scrooge.jpg Port Authority Police Department Sgt. John Farrell reportedly earned almost $30,000 extra in 16 days, which is causing some confusion. Inspector Kenneth Honig reportedly signed off on 227 hours of overtime for Farrell, which averages to just over 14 hours of OT a day. Add that to an 8 or 9 hour workday and you have almost 24 straight hours of work for over two weeks. When asked why he approved it, Honig told the Post, "Yeah, I authorized it, but so what? The feds are paying." And their money bucket is bottomless.

The feds were paying because the OT was earned on the weekend of the UN General Assembly. Farrell argued,"It's UN weekend. Dignitaries are flying in and out through the evening. If a plane is supposed to leave at 8 [p.m.], sometimes it leaves at 1 or 1:30 in the morning...and sometimes you have to see things through. And if that means staying till the plane leaves, you stay 'til the plane leaves." However, working until two in the morning still doesn't account for 227 hours of overtime over 16 days. He said he couldn't discuss it, but suggested that if he were actually making $15,000 a week in overtime, he'd be driving something nicer than his 17-year-old truck.

Honig was briefly placed on administrative duty while the Port Authority investigated the situation, but they could find no evidence of criminality. Could it be that Farrell is simply an honest, hardworking American who was doing his duty to protect the world's ruling class? Someone get him a new truck.

Who is Inspector Honig's superior(s)? They approve of Inspector Honig's response?

another great piece of responsible journalism. jumping to conclusions when not all the facts are out.

for all we know this sergeant could have been on his annual vacation for that span, which would mean that any hours worked were overtime hours. it also doesnt take into account his days off.

now hypothetically, lets say for arguments sake he wasnt on his vacation. he worked 227 hours overtime. now if his days off were saturday and sunday, for all we know this 16 day period they question could have started on a saturday. which would mean in that span he would have 6 days off. if he worked 16 hours on each of his days off, that equals 96 hours. that leaves 131 hours of overtime for the other 10 days, or 13 hours a day.

its not like this guy was sitting home on his ass collecting a fat check. he was at work, away from his family. i hardly see this as some scandal as the media makes it out to be.

BS...that's FAR too much O.T. in such a sort time span. And, Honig's response is glib and insulting to not just locals but AMERICAN taxpayers. If this is how a lot of federal homeland security $ ends up, it should be drastically reduced. This is an example of nothing more than the taxpayer being ass raped by a public sector union O.T. gravy-train.

far too much? says who? you?

union OT rules has NOTHING to do with it. when the UN comes to town, its very simple, they need extra officers to do extra work. they cant just pull officers away from their regular duties to provide this security, and they cant hire new officers just for UN week. so the only option is to pay overtime out. the feds set aside a certain amount of money for the agency to cover their overtime costs. it just so happens that a lot of this overtime went to one guy. if they didnt pay it to him, they would have paid that overtime to someone else.

well i can already see people editing their posts after others respond is going to be a problem.

i completely agree, funding for the UN general assembly should be reduced. but its not cause the working man goes out there and takes advantage of the overtime opportunities offered up to him. he worked a lot of hours and made a lot of money. good for him. all these articles are villain-izing him when the fact of the matter is the feds come up with the blueprint of what extra personnel they need and then they foot the bill for the local agencies to fill those positions. the same week this guy was working non stop, there were thousands of nypd cops ON OVERTIME stationed outside hotels and blocking off streets where "foreign dignitaries" were staying.

the bottom line is, this story should be about the federal government, and how ridiculous the UN is, not about some hard working stiff who worked almost 16 days strait so he could live more comfortably. the fact that some people find fault in what this sgt did is beyond me. all he did was agree to work some overtime shifts that were provided to him.
