Not-So-Empty Lot Outrages Brooklyn Locals

emptylot1110.jpg

There's an empty lot on Pacific Street (near Smith Street) in Brooklyn that's got locals outraged; they've brought their complaints to the Daily News, and say the overgrown lot has become a haven for some unsavory characters. The empty space is right next door to Pacifico restaurant, and one employee there says she's heard everything from fighting to moaning emanating from the lot late at night.

The unmaintained piece of land has become home to a bloody mattress, liquor bottles, out-of-commission cars, and other assorted junk; current tenants include drifters and rats. A nearby resident explains, "It might look abandoned, but if you look closer, you see how often it's actually used. There's garbage everywhere and it's obvious that people chill out around here." Not for long! The Sanitation Department is on it—they ordered the owner (262-276 Atlantic Realty Corp.) to clean the mess by tomorrow, and said if it's not done, the city will clean it and send a bill. They also noted that none of the neighbors had ever called 311 to complain about the lot in the past, so they were not aware of the problem.

BS on that 311 bit!! I've called twice this year!

Hey neighbor! I also called 311 on several occasions and also 911 once when I was harassed while coming home late from work by the tenants of Shantytown. I was thrilled to see that dumpster being loaded up this morning! I mean, I like bottles of Georgi littering the block I invested my life savings in as much as the next guy....

I walk past this a lot and there are definitely people hanging out in there pretty often. I dont think its that cluttered anymore though. I think the real problem on the block is Pacifico. The food is terrible!

oh man... where's the goddang landmark status for this place?

What is that dark green line at the bottom left corner of the photo? Was the image altered to hide something?

that's what emanating moaning looks like when it's captured on film. it's pretty rare.

  • i live down the block from the lot & often times in the summer the old men in the neighborhood bbq over there. it's probably not sanitary, but with the lack of parks in our section of the neighborhood i guess it works. it's ugly, but it's definitely cleaner than the outdated photo above. r.i.p. trout

Ahhh, nothing says romance like a bloody mattress in an abandoned lot surrounded by jalopies in Boerum Hill.

  • "and one employee there says she's heard everything from fighting to moaning emanating from the lot late at night."

Sounds like every apartment I've ever lived in or near.

Amen to that. The girl who lives upstairs from me apparently has a new boyfriend that she is very fond of.
