Woman Struck, Killed By Sports Car On UWS

112710crash.jpg A 68-year-old woman carrying her groceries was fatally struck by a white Dodge Charger as she was crossing 93rd and Columbus Avenue yesterday afternoon. Margaret Fischer was reportedly not in the crosswalk, but was mowed down by the car. She was quickly rushed to the hospital, where she died. One witness told the Post, “She was laying there like a ragdoll. All of her groceries were all over the street and her shows were knocked off." A Good Samaritan chased down driver 24-year-old Jessica Altruz, who fled the scene. Altruz reportedly yelled (or sobbed) at the scene, "It was my light!"

Altruz hit Fischer so hard that it shattered her windshield, but she still attempted to drive away. She was stopped a block later, and was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an incident. It's unclear whether Altruz actually did have the light. According to recent data, 45% of pedestrians killed at intersections were obeying traffic signals when they were struck.

  • Right of way doesn't mean right to hit people...

Forgive me for being a troll, but it just strikes me as odd to specify that it was a SPORTS car. That said, horrible story, and the driver should get a sever punishment. Let the other's complain about cyclists, but there are simply way too many cars in NYC, certainly in Manhattan. There's no reason or need for there to be so many.

  • Powerhugs

Forgive me for using this story as tragic as it is to limit cars when some people who are Manhattan residents have the right to own a car just like anyone else in this nation. In addition it the story doesn't mention whether or not the driver was drunk or simply using bad judgement when pedestrians sometimes don't look when crossing or bikers come from the wrong direction into traffic. The city is a complicated driving obstacle course with everyone moving in their own worlds.

  • aspiringrapper

Sad story. Right down to the part where her "shows" were knocked off.

  • freddynyc

    Anyone would hit that?

  • JimLu

The pedestrian always has the right of way regardless if they are walking against the light or not. You don't mow somebody down just because you have a green light.

  • wilsonUWS

Wrong. If you are jaywalking you are wrong.

The driver is still garbage for leaving the scene.

  • Petey

Wrong. The pedestrian doesn't have the right of way if his signal says "don't walk".

  • mns

Bicyclists are a menace. We should remove all the bike lanes.

  • HormelChavez

doees MNS somehow stand for "TROLL"?

  • HormelChavez

It's really disheartening how such a large percentage of drivers at any time would mow you down and then take off. We're all just a step away from being plowed down and having it all end at the hands of some idiot like this woman.

last year I was hit by a driver while I was in the cross walk and had the light. we got into an argument where she told me that the sign told her she HAD to go. The sign said that after stopping she could take a right on red.

charging this woman will be most effective if they can get a lot fo media attention.

    A Dodge Charger is not a sports car; it's a four-door sedan.

  • d to the hospital, where she died. One witness told the Post, “She was laying there like a ragdoll. All of her groceries were all over the street and her shows were knocked off

you mean shoes, typo above. And this bytch should be locked up

  • youngpro

all that just to point out it was a typo?

also, why should she be locked up? have you read the facts yet? driver had the green, pedestrian wasnt using the crosswalk and crossed despite not having the light. please read facts then make comments. the only thing the driver will get is leaving the scene of an accident.

  • just saying

It's not clear whether or not Jessica Altruz had the light. Of course, Ms. Altruz claimed that she did. However, after mowing down the elderly woman, Altruz immediately sped off which in itself says volumes about the kind of person Altruz is--and she was apparently speeding before she hit the woman.

  • youngpro

driving off only gets you leaving the scene of an accident- period. she could speak as many volumes as she wants, the law doesnt give a shit in that regard. nevertheless, had the victim lived, she would have probably been charged herself.

  • sweetie, where have you been? I thought you stop loving me. :D

  • youngpro

can you try and answer the question this time?

  • cmdrogogov

That and driving like an imbecile - but everyone else does it so that makes alright?
