Dead Woman In Marcus Garvey Park Ruled A Murder

112710marcus.jpg On Wednesday, police found the body of a nude woman in Marcus Garvey Park in Harlem. Although initial reports suggested the woman may have been emotionally disturbed, last night police announced that they were treating Nina Rivera's death as a homicide.

The murder of Rivera, who was found under a pile of leaves near East 122nd Street and Madison Avenue, has brought up concerns over safety in the park, which stretches from West 120nd to 124th Streets from Madison Avenue to Mount Morris Park West. One of the problems is that the park falls between two precincts and two community boards, leading to a lot of confusion: "The park really is split down the middle. We want to have a sit down and discuss problem areas and what we can do," Paimaan Lodhi, district manager for Community Board 10, told DNAInfo.

This park is sketchy at night - there is a small doggy park which seems OK, but the rest of the park is not well patrolled or well lit - I'm surprised that it isn't considering the proximity to two police precincts. During summer the # of people sleeping the park increases exponentially making it difficult to enjoy the beauty of the park at dusk. Let's hope it's safer when the amphitheater is finished.

Nekked stiff under a pile of leaves in the park, yep, that sounds like murder. Brilliant work, NYPD, Sherlock Holmes would be jealous.

It couldn't be a homicide if she was emotionally disturbed?
