Bloomberg's Bouncer Charged With Attempted Murder

112710gun.jpg NYPD officer Leopold McLean, who had long worked on security detail for Mayor Bloomberg, has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly shooting his girlfriend's ex-lover and then trying to cover it up. McLean's girlfriend called him over after her ex boyfriend LePaul Gammons, whom she had a restraining order against, said he was coming over. McLean says he only shot Gammons in self defense, but a new story has emerged.

Forensics initially showed that Gammons was most likely running away from McLean when he sustained a shot to the buttocks. According to the court complaint, McLean pulled the gun on Gammons and chased him down 119th Road in Jamaica. McLean then reportedly called 911 to report a robbery, not the shooting. McLean was off-duty at the time.

Other charges against McLean include assault, criminal use of a firearm and reckless endangerment. He was released on $10,000 bail, and is due back in court in January. If convicted he faces up to 25 years in prison.

Advance team? He's 3 feet behind him during the St. Patrick's day parade...arguably the most public appearance by the mayor during the year.

This McLean obviously made a big mistake, and there will be consequences, as appropriate. I can't bring myself to feel too bad for the abusive piece of shit that got shot, but we can't just go shooting our problems away.

    "Bloomberg's Bouncer"

What would a mayor's bouncer even be? He works the door at the mayor's parties?

In fact, McLean was part of the advance team on the security detail, scouting locations before the mayor's arrival. That likely means he was rarely even on site at the same time as Bloomberg, so didn't "bounce" for him.

Good try by the mayor's people trying to distance themselves...thats him on the right.

Ha! Very interesting... but I suppose not at all surprising.

don't know which bozos set up these bails, but "$10,000 bail" for attempted murder?

    WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT?

  • jaycjay

Bail is meant only to assure that the accused will show up at required court appearances, it's not punishment for the alleged crime. It's also not supposed to be set at such a high amount that it can't be met, though in practice that certainly is sometimes the case.

Of course bail amounts generally are higher for more serious crimes, for the reason that people may be willing to forfeit greater amounts by skipping out when they're facing more severe punishments. But other considerations are the finances of the accused person, employment, home ownership, and "ties to the community".

It's quite likely here that the prosecutor and judge both agreed with the defense that there's little risk that McLean will try to flee.
