Holiday Shopping Officially Begins With Black Friday

It's barely after 9 a.m. and many Americans have already gone to and come back from big retailers' Black Friday sales. Especially since some stores had their Black Friday sales start last night: One Queens resident was at the Times Square Toys 'R' Us, which was opening at 10 p.m.; she told the AP, "I thought, good, we'll come here and I won't have to go tomorrow," but then admitted she would also be getting up at 6 a.m. for more bargain hunting.

The NY Times went to a Patchogue, NY Best Buy, where they found "Tony Li, a 22-year-old student," first in line. "Mr. Li said he had been waiting, sleeping in his car and playing poker to pass the time since 9 a.m. Thursday. He said he planned to spend up to $5,000 on TVs and computers for himself, his friends and his family. 'It’s fun for me because this is what I do on Thanksgiving,' he said."

And at a NJ Best Buy, doors were supposed to open at 5 a.m., but they opened at 4 a.m. because of the rain—hundreds of people were waiting outside. They were allowed in in groups of 50 and one pair of brothers said it was worth waiting hours to get a 40" Westinghouse TV or their mom at the price of $299, since it usually costs $549.
