New York's Animal Care and Control has come under some scrutiny this year after trying to lockdown its workers from posting photos and information about shelters on the internet. Now, a new report by ABC suggests why they may not want that info leaking out: they talked to two AC&C workers who say that the stray animals are often housed in terrible conditions.

Those terrible conditions include cats stacked in small cages, dogs not walked for days, dogs wallowing in their own waste, cages caked with filth, and cat food mixed with kitty litter. And it's a problem in all three of their city locations: "Absolutely, on a daily basis you can walk into the shelter and find these conditions in the places that aren't visible to the public," one anonymous insider told ABC. Workers say the budget for the non-profit has been cut by $1.5 million by the Dept. Of Health in the last two years, and the volunteer program was suspended for awhile, leaving no one to walk the dogs. "I'm not going to see the animals are suffering. None of the animals are being neglected or abused. Can we provide better care? Absolutely," said Richard Gentles, development director.

What a tragic happening. Politicians should realized that pets also needs care and attention. They just like us humans needs food and shelter. What will happen to them if the budget will be cut then? More animals will likely to be in hunger and most of all who will take care of them? Don't you realized that?

Horrifying, but unfortunately not surprising. I don't have much faith in our politicians and administrators restoring the funding that is needed... What all of us must do is raise awareness and promote adoption of pets, especially now, when many people are going to be impulsively buying pets as holiday gifts... Please adopt. And tell others about adoption and resources such as petfinder.com .

I don't know how bad the city animal shelters were before but I blame bloombag. He wants his hands clean but it's his admin who practically made CACC a city agency. and, it's not a no kill shelter. another bloombag legacy.

    Memo to Julie Bank:

Now you HAVE to hire me to do your PR!

  • the main issues is that Bloomberg/Quinn cut their budget by over 70% in the last few years. this is outrageous how Bloomberg has no problem hiring a co chancellor for his selected candidate Black nor how Quinn has no problem hiring a laywer at $600/hr to defend her against the slush funds. They spend all our money on themselves and their cronies while the weak and defenseless suffer tremendously. this sucks.
