Arrest Made In Wrong-Way Major Deegan Crash

Police have arrested Pablo Ovalles, 26, of Roslindale, Massachusetts for drunkenly driving his Cadillac northbound in the southbound lane of the Major Deegan Expressway early Saturday morning, crashing into Infiniti driver Patrick Smith of New Jersey and killing him instantly. Ovalles was charged with vehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated after being taken to Lincoln Hospital, where he was in stable condition.

Police also say that shortly before the accident, Ovalles had been going east on Fordham Road and hit another car's bumper, causing minor damage. They suspect he was fleeing the scene of that accident when he took a wrong turn onto the Deegan, and hit Smith around 3:45 a.m. One witness told the Post, "He made the wrong left. People always make that mistake and go the wrong way."

There are no reports of what Ovalles's blood alcohol content was at the time of the crash, but it echoes last summer's wrong-way crash on the Taconic, which left eight dead. Driver Diane Schuler was found to have a BAC twice the legal limit, and had a bottle of Absolut vodka in the minivan.

So, we have another "Pablo" taking up jail space! Is he legal? I've found that the driver's license is frequently not valid and no insurance. We shall see, I hope.

When a driver hits another driver, there are charges. However, when a driver hits a cyclist or pedestrian, they are often not even charged. WTF??
