BK Woman Left Double Amputee After "Simple Procedure"

2010_11_winth.jpg
Brooklyn mother Stacey Galette endured what must be the worst gynecological operation in history: Galette entered Winthrop University Hospital two years ago for a "simple procedure," but complications from it eventually led to her being put in a medically induced coma for three weeks, resulting in permanent partial hearing loss, and the amputation of both of her lower legs.

Galette is now suing the hospital for unspecified damages in a massive medical malpractice suit she filed yesterday. A trained medical technician, she claims that she was perfectly healthy before the procedure, which was supposed to take up one day in the hospital. She says doctors punctured her intestine during the operation, triggering an infection, blood poisoning and gangrene in her lower legs. "It's horrifying. She will be spending the rest of her life with a below-the-knees amputation, all because the doctors didn't follow accepted medical practice," said her lawyer Sanford Rubenstein.

Galette, who has a 10-year-old daughter, has been living in "endless pain" since the procedure, is going through a divorce, and is on "total disability" because she hasn't been able to work. "I have prosthetics, and I'm just starting to walk. It's very painful, but I'm trying. It's very hard," said Galette.

Cheer up! Cheer up! You'll be a millionaire soon!

So she might be partially deaf, and unable to run... but I don't think she ever has to worry about money again.

Of course, it sucks, but there's an upside.

Going through a divorce too? Sounds like somebody is an asshole.

As opposed to losing her upper legs?

  • Rocknrope

Most people with half a brain understand that "lower legs" means the area below the knee.

I know you needed to find a picture to accompany this story, but if that's not Ms. Gallette in the photo, it feel rather unsympathetic and coarse.
