Is Oprah New Jersey Bound?

frickestateoprah1110.jpg Oprah may be launching her new network from Los Angeles, but it looks like she's eyeing the East Coast for a new permanent home. According to the NY Post, she was house-hunting yesterday along the banks of the Hudson, and amongst the homes she viewed was a $68 million mansion in Alpine, New Jersey (that's about a 30 minute drive into the city)—on the grounds of the old Frick estate.

While looking for some new digs commonly includes a walk up six flights of stairs for many of us, for Oprah, it's more like a three-car caravan and a request that no one be visible when she views her would-be estate. This particular estate encluded 19 bedrooms, 12 bathrooms, a carriage house, gardens, a library, a ballroom, tennis court, movie theater, wine cellar... whatever, try to find some comfort here.

The very wealthy suburb is also home to Chris Rock, P Diddy, Mary J. Blige, and other other celebrities, although Rock has pointed out:

I will give you an example of how race affects my life. I live in a place called Alpine, New Jersey. My house costs millions of dollars. Don't hate the player, hate the game. In my neighborhood, there are four black people. Hundreds of houses, four black people. Who are these black people? Well, there's me, Mary J. Blige, Jay-Z and Eddie Murphy. Only black people in the whole neighborhood. So let's break it down, let's break it down: me, I'm a decent comedian. I'm a'ight. [applause] Mary J. Blige, one of the greatest R&B singers to ever walk the Earth. Jay-Z, one of the greatest rappers to ever live. Eddie Murphy, one of the funniest actors to ever, ever do it. Do you know what the white man who lives next door to me does for a living? He's a fucking dentist! He ain't the best dentist in the world...he ain't going to the dental hall of fame...he don't get plaques for getting rid of plaque. He's just a yank-your-tooth-out dentist. See, the black man gotta fly to get to somethin' the white man can walk to.

    Hey, Chris Rock. Can you show us all the black dentists that have been discriminated against by this community? If not, then maybe the black man can walk just as easily as the white man. If he wanted to, but maybe he doesn't. Look, for instance, at Cliff Huxtable. A fictional character, to be sure, but even a successful black man like that lived in vibrant Brooklyn, not some gated suburb somewhere. George Jefferson lived in a luxury high rise uptown. Getting out of the ghetto doesn't necessarily mean leaving the city.

    Are you really dumb enough to invoke two FICTIONAL TV characters?

  • Spirit of 76

    Are you really dumb enough to not notice I said they were fictional? The fact remains that a lot of rich people still prefer to maintain primary residences here in NYC, not on some lifeless, isolated plots in NJ. There's a reason there are still plenty of multimillion dollar condos bought and sold all the time in the city.

    Next time, try contributing some content to the thread instead of trying to be a smartass.

    @Chris Rock

    Maybe you can tell the kids that there's more to life than entertainment ... hmm, like there are other careers besides rap star, comedian, movie star, etc.

    That said, I don't think the house is big enough for O and her dogs. She really can use something a lot bigger.
