Today Is Veterans Day

2010_11_vetday.jpg Today is Veterans Day, which means government offices and courts are closed, as well as NYC public schools. There's no regular mail delivery or garbage pickup; additionally alternate side of the street parking regulations are suspended today. The Veterans Day Parade starts at 11:30 a.m. on Fifth Avenue at 26th Street, and heads up to 52nd Street. The opening ceremony is at the Eternal Light Monument at Madison Square Park, where there will be a 21 gun salute. Metro-North also has an 11 a.m. ceremony at Grand Central with the MTA Police Pipe and Drum Band.

We who are left, how shall we look again

Happily on the sun or feel the rain

Without remembering how they who went

    Ungrudgingly and spent

Their lives for us loved, too, the sun and rain?

A bird among the rain-wet lilac sings -

But we, how shall we turn to little things

And listen to the birds and winds and streams

    Made holy by their dreams,

Nor feel the heart-break in the heart of things?

    - "Lament", Wilfrid Gibson

  • A humble request...when parking regulations are suspended for a holiday, beforehand, you, gothamist should plaster it all over your site...this would save some of us from getting up in the morning to move our cars unnecessarily....this would be appreciated. Thanks

Remember the demographics of this site believe cars are evil and we should all be walking, using the bus/subway and bicycle.
