Report: Brooklyn's Got NYC's Safest Neighborhood

mapsafest1110.jpg The website WalletPop claims to know the 29 safest neighborhoods in America's major cities, and yes, New York has earned a spot in the top.

According to their data, Bedford Avenue—in the 11210 zip code, which seems to be Midwood/Flatlands—is the safest neighborhood in the five boroughs, with the chance of becoming a victim there (in one year) being 1 in 500. In fact, it's safer than 90% of all U.S. neighborhoods! The site says their "exclusive research" actually reveals that some city neighborhoods are indeed safer than rural neighborhoods (duh).

So where did this list come from? Neighborhood crime data based on FBI data from all 17,000 local law enforcement agencies. The site notes that "these same cities are also home to the most dangerous neighborhoods in America," but they don't tell us where those are. WalletPop did, however, tell us back in February that 5th and Park Avenues, from 77th to 84th Street on the Upper East Side were the safest blocks in the city... even though they aren't in the 11210 zip code.

Pretty much everything approximately between Ocean Avenue to Nostrand Avenue and from Avenue H to Avenue U is very quiet and safe. I walked through there at 2 am and felt quite safe. However the area in the immediate vicinity of Madison HS after the kids are let out (2:30pm - 3:30pm) is a bit of an exception to the rule. Some yuppie Asian families live there too. The locals, Jewish or otherwise, are okay folks.

if you look at the list you would be very surprised at which cities are listed. I think it sounds odd. Bedford AVE is not a neighborhood. 1 in 500? seriously? their stats sound skewered.

You mean the same "local law enforcement agencies" that's been fudging the numbers for the past decade?

Yes, the few blocks with Hasidic owned mansions near the BK College is pretty and safe, but its surrounded by the "other" people.

  • Thats also a community that has its own police force and community courts. It wouldnt be surprising if thats partly why what happens in the community doesnt get counted.
