The 57-year old son of one of the Big Band era's most famous bandleaders was arrested in Manhattan this morning after movers discovered a huge cache of weapons in a suitcase he was shipping, including "an AK-47 assault rifle, a shotgun, two rifles, 96 knives and more than 2,800 rounds of ammunition," according to ABC News.

Jonathan Shaw, who developed a name for himself as a tattoo-artist-for-the-stars while running Fun City Tattoo Parlor on St. Marks Place until 2004, was in town to help a friend put on an art exhibition at the Jewish Museum, according to the New York Post.

He's facing a slew of charges, including 113 counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Shaw's lawyer claims that he purchased all the weapons legally at least fifteen years ago and has receipts, but wouldn't specify where Shaw intended to ship the cache. "This is a good honest man," he said. Shaw is being held on $250,000 bond, and ADA Christopher Prevost noted that Shaw "faces a significant prison sentence."

His father, Artie, a world-famous jazz clarinetist and bandleader who died in 2004, was best known for his hits "Begin the Beguine," "Stardust," and "Interlude in B-flat." He was apparently also an expert sharpshooter.

Shaw should have been more careful shipping out his firearms and ammo. There's all kinds of rules and regulations for shipping firearms (and ammo), especially on a plane. He hired legit movers and he's surprised this happened?

And WTF is up with 113 counts! Each individual knife? That's f'ed up. NYC is f'ed up. Even pellet guns (airguns) are outlawed and airsoft have to be clear plastic.

96 knives,,,3 rifles and one shotgun...

i had more weapons than that when i was 16 yrs old.

2800 rounds? haha thats one day of target practice for a serious marksman.

Since when is it illegal to possess rifles and shotguns? Possessing handguns requires a permit in New York, but rifles and shotguns are different.
