It feels like it only just began, but it was a big day for first-time NYC marathon runners. Edna Kiplagat of Kenya has won the ING New York City women's marathon. The 31-year-old Kenyan finished in 2:28:20; she was one of the favorites of this years race, having won the Los Angeles Marathon in March. American Shalane Flanagan, 2008 Beijing Olympic 10,000m bronze medalist, came in second in her marathon debut, finishing twenty seconds behind, and Kenyan Mary Keitany, who was also making her marathon debut, came in third, twenty-one seconds behind Flanagan.

In the men's race Gebre Gebremariam of Ethiopia came in first, with a time of 2:08:14. This was Gebremariam's first NYC marathon; he is the 4th debutant to win the men's race. Emmanuel Mutai of Kenya came in second, a little more than a minute behind at 2:09:17, and fellow Kenyan Moses Kigen Kipkosgei came in third with 2:10:39. Meb Keflezighi was the highest ranking American runner, coming in fifth place with a time of 2:11:38.
