Ruby's Owner Not Too Optimistic, Sitting Shiva

110410rubys.jpg Grub Street has a great Q&A with Michael Sarrel, owner of Ruby's Bar and Grill, the beloved old dive that's being forced out of the Coney Island boardwalk after 76 years in operation. Sarrel says, "We are 75 percent resolved that it’s over; however, we’re 25 percent resolved that it’s not."

He's opening up again for one day only on Saturday, but "as far as any rally goes, those are patrons putting it together. I’m pleased by it, but for me I’m just opening up my business for what might be the last time. I’m Jewish, so we sit Shiva and it’s a time of mourning, and Christians have a wake which is a time of celebration—so I think we’ve mourned now and on Saturday we plan to celebrate."

It's all been said before, but how pathetic is it that the city is now turning its Coney Island social scene over to a company that's not only located outside of NYC, but outside of the entire country? Do they think the Italians really know what NYers want better than NYers do? This wouldn't be quite so bad even if the storefronts were being replaced with stuff like Shake Shack. At least that's a homegrown, quintessentially New York attraction.

this is so incredibly shitty... some yup in the village gets her "tree house" landmarked but something like this which is infinitely more an an NYC institution has to go?

i would love to see them document the place, pack up, and set up a replica somewhere close. i'll miss having a beer there with a view :(

    shame

"and Christians have a wake which is a time of celebration"

    Wrong.

I'm sorry but i have NEVER been to a wake that was a celebration.

"I’m Jewish" and on Saturday we plan to celebrate."

First you're sitting shiva then saying you're gonna celebrate on shabbat, make up your mind!

I think he means an Irish wake. Those are often celebratory (I know from experience.)
