Panhandlers Jump Bushwick Man, Stab His Eye

Besides the fact that they are obviously having a shittier time of it than you are, you may want to be nice to panhandlers for reasons beyond altruism. Like if you don't want lose an eye. Because an encounter can go from asking for change to that a lot quicker than you would think.

Panhandlers Juan Quiste, 20, and Almagro Santiago, 25, stopped a man on Wilson Avenue near Menahan Street at about 5 a.m. last Sunday in Bushwick to ask him to buy them a beer. The man refused, and allegedly told them that he had a job and they should get one, too. The pair did not appreciate the man's advice, beat him mercilessly, and stabbed him in the eye. A third party who wandered by broke up the fight, and the two men were caught by police soon after. The man is in stable condition, but may lose his sight in his left eye. This does prove that some panhandlers are definitely not faking it.

Yet another Republican eagerly handing out free advice.

  • Love Your Life

The asshole was definitely not from New York, good for him, a good old New York leason. Arrrrrrrhhhhhhhhh!

  • Paula, who are these socialized that run NYC?????! Bloomberg is corporate scum.

  • Gwinny

Obviously, it's all the politicians who constantly cite Karl Marx as the inspiration for their policies. Like, duh.

  • Awesome mr guy. I always respond to their panhandling that I have no money dice bloomberg became mayor for life. It gets a good laugh and gets me off the hook.

I'm saying that giving criminals the upper hand by practically ASSURING them that their intended victims are unarmed is the stupidest damn thing I've ever heard of and could have only been conceived by the type of liberal-minded, freedom-strangling, Socialist morons that have run New York City since the 1910's.

States that have laxed gun laws have a 60 percent higher gun-related murder rate and three times as many police officers being shot than states with strict firearm laws. These states also have a higher rate of domestic violence involving guns. Less restrictive laws would put guns in the hands of criminals, not law-abiding citizens.

These panhandlers don't sound like homeless people, they sound just like muggers - this was probably going to happen anyway. Unless of course, people actually are giving up on life at age 20.

Tell me, again, Mayor Bloomberg, why the plain language of the Second Amendment doesn't apply in New York City?

"A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed [unless such keeping and bearing occurs in a municipality in the State of New York with in excess of 1 million people, in which case this right isn't really a right at all; its just something you, as a resident of a city in New York State in excess of 1 million people have to tolerate while some sad-ass lowlife stabs the shit out of your EYE while you can't defend yourself."

We now return you to the balance of your constitutional rights....

  • Dogsbody

The plain language of the second ammendment??? It's not even a coherent sentence. If it was so plain, there would be far fewer differences of interpretation.

  • Boogie Down

Stabbing someone in the eye is a ridiculous reaction to verbal disrespect. However, it is important to remain, at the very least, polite to all those you encounter. It's has served me well for over 30 years. Too bad this kid had to learn this important lesson in such a horrible way.

  • Boogie Down

Not meant as a reply to Paula (N.B. - I can be impolite to Paula on the interwebs since she can't stab my eye out).

  • Boogie Down

I just *love* people who insist on using the word "Socialist" in sentences despite clearly having no idea what that word actually means. It makes clear that said person should no longer be paid any mind. (Though that was clear with this particular ignoramus the first time she posted on Gothamist.)

  • glen glenn

I always say we need more well regulated militias!

  • jaycjay

I don't get it. You're saying it would have been better if these "panhandlers" could have gotten guns, so they could have shot him in the eye?

Was something preventing him from carrying his own knife? Why does a person always need a GUN to defend himself??

  • amg2000

It's 5 am on Sunday morning in Bushwick, and you've got not one but two panhandlers asking you for money, use some common sense and don't be an a-hole!

  • Cannibal

    I love Old New York!!

  • mrguy

If thine eye ye wish to keep

Sass not ye the homeless creep

Hold thy tongue and bite thy lip

and walk ye at a steady clip

If yon bum gets in thy face

    lower gaze and quicken pace

    engage him not, eschew advice

and look not back; not once, not twice

heed these words that you may see

    tomorrow, stereoscopically
