NYU Official's Son Shot In His Village Apt., Drug Deal Suspected

2010_10_gvilsh.jpg On Monday night, the 24-year-old son of a NYU development official was shot in his Bleecker Street apartment, along with a convicted drug dealer in what police believe was a robbery during a drug deal. According to the Daily News, Alex Bongard, 24, and Luke Hinde, who served time for marijuana possession, "were selling marijuana from Bongard's third-floor apartment when two men posing as customers showed up at 11:30 p.m. Monday, police said. As the dealers opened the door, the intruders - who wore ski masks - stormed inside. One pulled out a handgun and opened fire."

The Post reports that a third person, a woman, was also in the apartment; the suspects left with cash and the woman's purse. The woman called 911 while Bongard, who was shot in the chest, and Hinde, who was shot in the stomach, were wounded. Both victims are expected to survive.

Bongard's mother, Debra LaMorte, is the senior vice president of development at NYU. Police also found marijuana in the apartment (which is not owned by NYU); the Post has this dramatic description of Hinde's past: He "recently served state prison time in Arizona for a marijuana-related conviction. Less than a month after his November 2009 parole, he led Utah cops on a wild, 130-mph chase through the desert in a car loaded with pot."

In September, a Pace student was fatally shot in his Financial District apartment; police believe he was selling drugs and killed during a robbery attempt.

Home invasion robberies get a lot of attention, not to mention the way they boost firearms sales, but in reality the vast majority of them target people who are involved in the drug trade.

  • NewHCE

Exactly. Anti gun folks like to point out the stat that says something like "If you own a gun, it is more likely than not to be used to shoot a family member, friend or acquaintance". What they don't tell you is that "acquaintance"="Guy you are buying drugs from when the deal goes bad."

  • Peter

I'm not anti-gun by any means, and support responsible gun ownership, but I've also looked at various gun/survivalist forums, and my God the amount of paranoia on display is just staggering. All sorts of lurid home-invasion stories. Typically, the homeowners pumps several shots into the PCP-using and/or schizophrenic home invader, but because the homeowner was foolish enough to use a 9mm instead of a .40 caliber pistol, or used birdshot instead of buckshot in his 12-gauge, the criminal laughs off the wounds like a few bee stings and beats the homeowner to death with his bare hands.

Funny, you'll never see any cites or other references for these stories.

Or your 7 years old's best friend.

    But you're right

The King of England still hasn't come back so the violence is worth it.

Keep thinking that narrow way. If you only trust the government to own guns, then the government will control every aspect of your life.

See, drug laws keep our kids safe.

If all the pot dealers and smokers get shot then all our kids will be safe, and I know my kid would never smoke pot and yours wouldn't either so it's only the bad people out there whoose kids will be killed, so don't worry. The war on drugs is working.
