Ruby's Bar, Others Pushed Out of Coney Island Boardwalk

Beloved Coney Island dive Ruby's Bar and Grill is being ousted from the boardwalk. According to a tipster associated with Ruby's, Zamperla, the Italian company that turned Astroland into Luna Park, has told Ruby's that the lease will not be renewed, as feared. The quintessential Coney Island watering hole now has two weeks to vacate the premises, as does The Grill House, Tom's Souvenir shop, and Paul's Daughter. (Nathan's and Lola Star will reportedly be allowed to stay.) So what's in store for the boardwalk? Check out these underwhelming vague new renderings!

According to the press release, today we have witnessed the "NEW VISION FOR CONEY ISLAND BOARDWALK UNVEILED." The statement sent out by Zamerpla (which is operating as Central Amusement International [CAI] on the boardwalk), declares that "the multi-million dollar program, which will include some long-time Coney Island favorites as well as the operators of retail facilities at another world-renown beach resort, will bring back the world-class mix of entertainment, dining and nightlife that was once a hallmark of the famed Boardwalk." Ah, well that explains everything.

No mention is made of the ousted businesses in the press release sent out by Zamperla/CAI, but our source at Ruby's tells us, "Zamperla wants a sports bar & sit down rest on the boardwalk. So no New Year's day party this year at Ruby's!"

I've been a friend of and a customer in Rubys for a good number of years. The closing of Rubys is another hole in the heart of the city. This city is losing its sense of self because everything must fit into a master plan of Disneyfication. The Bloomberg/Zamperla idea of Coney Island is a sterile, plastic, squeaky clean operation.Coney has bounced back tremendously in the past number of years and the families & tourists enjoyed what Coney was all about.Loud, garrish, nice greasey food, cold beer etc. Rubys had it all! Photos going back to the 30s, a great jukebox...Sinatra,hip-hop,oldies..GREAT!Where am I gonna go now to watch the Mermaid Parade & have a cold one? I'm gonna miss the people that made the place...Mike,Dianna Rubyshost,Sam,Willie,Master,Shorty,Fitz. It's gonna be a cold winter and it looks like a even colder summer!!

giuliani wasn't 1/4 as bad as bloomberg. Times Square was one thing...but Bloomberg's tentacles have reached all over the city.

Is that what I felt crawling up my ass? I thought it might have been a bedbug.

In centuries to come, urban archeologists will look back and see two great extinction-level events in the microcosm of New York City. One will be the Moses era (including the demolition of Penn Station, although he wasn't directly responsible). The other will be the Giuliani-Bloomberg era. They'll call it the G-B extinction. Not as devastating as say, the Cretaceous-Tertiary event, but a terrible event nevertheless.

    Bloomys wrecking balls have arrived!!!

Bloomberg wont be satisfied until corporate chains take over every square inch of what was once original, and unique, New York. A nice, squeaky clean corporate sports bar and 'restaurant' for nice squeaky clean yuppies w/ money who want something 'different' but not THAT different (Rubys).

Its a shame to watch, and will one day be looked upon as a tragic period in this city.

We strolled by Luna Park last night and for their "Nights of Horror" they were charging a $25.00 per person admission. Not good.
