Rutgers Students Charged In Clementi Suicide Quit School

102910raviwei.jpg The two Rutgers students charged with multiple counts of invasion of privacy after allegedly watching webcam footage of classmate Tyler Clementi engaged in a sexual encounter with another man have quit the university. An attorney for Molly Wei, whose dorm room was allegedly where Clementi's roommate Dharun Ravi viewed (and Tweeted about) the encounter, says his client dropped out because she fears for her safety.

18,000 people have joined an online group demanding manslaughter charges against the two, and some online commenters have called for them to "return to their countries." On Wednesday night there was a protest decrying the "rush to judgment" against the two, led by the group Queering the Air. "We are against the crucifixion of two individuals for the sins of the larger society,'' said Robert O'Brien, an anthropology instructor and one of the leaders of Queering the Air. "Two students are being scapegoated for the failure of the university and the wider community to provide a safe environment for Rutgers’ diverse community."

Steven Goldstein, the director of Garden State Equality, the state's largest advocacy gay rights group, wants hate crime charges filed against Wei and Ravi. He dismissed Queering the Air a "radical fringe group," and tells the Daily Record, "They stand with (Ravi and Wei). We stand with Tyler Clementi." Ravi's attorney says, "They were given the option of withdrawing and they can reapply. Realistically, they couldn't go back no matter what. [Ravi] definitely plans to go somewhere else.'' A close friend of Wei's tells NJ.com, "Stuff like this goes on your record and then the whole world knows about it. She’s not worried. Once the truth comes out everything will be cleared up."

Its Rutgers responsibility to provide safe dorms. Its actually coded into law.

After the harassment happened once in Rutgers dorms, on the Rutgers network, the harassment happened a second time.

Would I send my kid to Rutgers? Never. They cling to "problem" student-residents even after somebodies dead & the national news has covered the story for months. They should have booted the kids weeks ago for saftey, if not general morale.

I feel as though they are the type of ppl that would have raced down the street as 4 yr olds, on their bikes and ran into some elderly woman causing her to break a hip but their parents shelter them from this...telling them it's not their responsibility, that they are not responsible for their actions because they are kids.

Yeah, they should prob quit school and leave the country, maybe move to Australia or something and start anew

It's unfortunate, but it's not manslaughter. Not even close.

I in no way condone their actions, but they basically were picking on a kid who killed himself. Kids get picked on every moment everywhere in the world. Sometimes really bad shit happens and you shouldn't have picked on the kid in the first place, but I am really uncomfortable with these two becoming the poster children of heinous, evil people that tortured some kid to death.

It's not nice to speak ill of the dead, but Tyler killed himself and the whole concept of suicide is that a person takes his/her own life, not someone else committing an act of homicide. He had issues and something probably would've pushed him over the edge if not these two. It's harsh to say, but unless someone intervened ASAP, Mr. Clementi's decision was inevitable.

I'm pro hate crime charges when it comes to racial and gay bashing, but in this case I think people are running around with pitchforks and torches demanding Wei and Ravi's heads for no good reason.

As commenter #1 said, I agree that the alleged "radical fringe group" seems to be the only party not frothing at the mouth. This is a tragedy but it's also being blown out of proportion in terms of everyone's need to have a say. Wei and Ravi will have to live with this for the rest of their lives and they won't ever escape it, time to let the authorities do their jobs and for everyone else to chill out.

i think that in this situation hate crime charges may make sense. didnt they specifically target him because they knew he was gay and wanted to embarass him over it? perhaps they didnt anticipate him commiting suicide but it was my understanding that they did it to invoke embarassment because of his sexual orientation

"once the truth comes out everything will be cleared up"...NICE TRY. Tell you what, Wei, you keep telling yourself that. Your life is going to just plain suck, for so long, and in oh so many ways. Ironically, it will be the internet (the vehicle you used as a weapon) that screws you over, because this is gonna follow you till your dead and buried. "Oh...you're THAT Molly Wei...sorry, that job was just filled/there's no more room in this class for your child/this apartment just got rented/." It'll go on and on, and rightfully so. And the Queering the Air guys...total AS**OLES.

Yep. Even long after other sites have dropped all mentions of her, she'll still be on the Tyler Clementi page on Wikipedia.

  • lazydayspoiler

A kid committed suicide, isn't that the issue? Shouldn't more focus be placed on how to help people cope with depression? Getting filmed was not the catalyst of this event, but was the final blow.

[Ravi] definitely plans to go somewhere else.

NYU would definitely take him as long as he doesn't need campus housing and doesn't need financial aid.

I'm a bit disappointed but not surprised that he wasn't expelled.

"once the truth comes out everything will be cleared up"

    - Excuse me!?

  • Spirit of 76

"Stuff like this goes on your record and then the whole world knows about it. She’s not worried."

Maybe that's the problem. She's not worried. She's never been worried. If she had publicly and forcefully denounced discrimination against gays and fought for increased privacy, people might actually think she cares. But she has stayed silent, basically giving the impression of "Who cares? I didn't do anything wrong. I'll be fine." Totally remorseless. She hasn't even said whether she misses Clementi.

  • DrGonzo

If she has an attorney, there is no doubt he would advise her to stay away from the media also, it doesn't seem like she had any part in this other than letting Ravi in her room while his roommate had a sexual encounter. The issue here seems more with the fact that Tyler was so self loathing that he committed suicide. I'm sorry they filmed him, but he should have just gotten some friends and beaten the crap out of Ravi.

  • Spirit of 76

Smooth move, Perry Mason. Violence is the answer to everything. Until you get charged with assault.

  • DrGonzo

At least he would still be alive.

    don't fight fire with fire

why does the "radical fringe group" sound a lot more like the voice of reason...
