Surprise! You Probably Can't Fit Into Barneys Clothes

Should you be able to afford Barneys Co-op, the latest addition to Brooklyn's Atlantic Avenue, you may not be able to fit into the clothes sold there.

One reporter recently tried on a $315 dress, only to discover Barneys offers clothes in three sizes: 1, 2, and 3 (representing small, medium, and large). She says, "I grabbed dresses in size two and three and headed to the fitting room. I’m a small or medium everywhere I’ve shopped, but I took the large because the dress looked like it ran small... but I couldn’t even get it over my hips!"

What's a girl to do? Call Barneys creative director Simon Doonan, of course—who recently said the store was a perfect fit for Brooklyn. When the reporter questioned if she was too fat for Barneys, Doonan told her, “There are certain designers who are all about the body. Others make an easy fit. You might need to look at other designers that focus less on the body.”

"You Probably Can't Fit Into Barneys Clothes"

Depends on which Barney. Barney Fife, no, I probably couldn't. On the other hand I probably could "fit into" Barney Gumble's clothes, though I would probably be swimming in them.

This reporter is making a blanket statement based on trying on ONE item of clothing. Also, this statement: "only to discover Barneys offers clothes in three sizes: 1, 2, and 3" is completely untrue, because Barneys carries lots of different lines that have completely different sizing criteria. Some size in 0/2/4/6 etc. and some use Italian sizing (38/40/42) while still others use S/M/L or 1/2/3. Not everyone can fit into Barneys clothing, and not everyone can afford Barneys clothing. Whatevs. Buy it or get over it.

Apparently, there are a lot of fake women (skinny ones, without curves) who exist in this City who can fit into and afford the clothes at Barneys. The store was really busy over the weekend.

The woman who wrote this article needs to shop a size up and if it doesn't exist, she needs to get over it or go on a diet.

How nice of you to exclude skinny women from your definition of "real women". I thought real women were the ones with boobs and a uterus. I didn't realize that only certain size women were real women. Idiot.

  • Blurry

Just who is this guy Barney, and why would I want to fit into his clothes?

  • spiritross

Women that look like young boys are as disgusting as men that like young boys.

Maybe women should demand designers to hire people that don't think pencils are attractive.

  • ktinnyc

Do you think that retailers and designers have no desire to make money, that they are just in business to exclude a set population of women?

What is your explaination for why many stores don't carry sizes for "real" women?

  • RumpShaker

I predict Barney's in Brooklyn will shutter in less than a year.

  • ktinnyc

I just don't see the problem. I don't get mad that I can't find any clothes that fit me at the big and tall shop. If nothing in the store fits you, move on. Let the market decide what sizes a store should stock.

  • Think2wice

You declasse Philistines! Those dresses only look good if they hang off of your jutting bones and joints like every so many plastic clothes hangers. It's looks sexy like that goddammit!

  • Hischick08

Real women have curves and I'm pretty sure the majority in this neighborhood do. Why did this dude think this store "was a perfect fit" for Brooklyn?

Real women are real women. period. curves or not. Some women are thin, some women are curvy. Is it fair to tell a stick thin supermodel that she's not a real woman? No. If you said "Average women have curves" that would be a true statement.

I'm with the others, let the free market decide. If their clothes don't fit you take your business elsewhere, that's Barney's loss.

  • Hischick08

Good Lawd...no need to get all philosophical.

  • Dogsbody

Some of the women in that neighborhood don't have curves...they have horizons.

Seriously though, if people don't like it, just don't shop there. If the place isn't a "good fit for the neighborhood", it'll go bust pretty soon and maybe something else will take its place. No big deal.

  • Hischick08

    Point taken.

  • matty

i don't know. is this sexist? i guess it kind of sucks for bigger women, but then they probably shouldn't shop at barney's right? The free-market wins again.
