Who's Buying $500 Socks?

socksexpensive1010.jpg Are there really people buying $500 pairs of socks out there? The NY Post is reporting on some sort of expensive sock trend, pointing to Rodarte's $500 multicolored hand-crocheted ones (pictured), and noting most high end retailers carry something similar. One New York PR girl told the paper, "They last forever, and they look amazing and feel comfortable. If you think about all the times you buy cheap socks and six months later they have holes in it, these don't." But... these crocheted socks come with holes, and besides, the editor of Elle warns, "The open-toe [shoe with] sock trend is very season-specific, and by the end of the fall, the trend is most likely to look dated or passé."

Forget the $500 socks-the real value is a service called Blacksocks (www.blacksocks.com), which delivers men's socks by sockscription-eliminating the hassle and time of actually buying socks (is there really a convenient time to go sock shopping?) The socks are made in Italy, shipped right to your door and sold in 74 countries! If you are interested, send me an email, lori@blacksocks.com and I'll send a voucher to the first 10 people who email me!

For the billionaire who has everything.

    Except a conscience.

I seriously doubt the PR girl's claim that "they last forever." Unless she means the socks are so impractical that no one would ever wear them enough to wear them out.

Saw the same thing in Chinatown, 3 pair for 7 bucks. Bought some for Xmas presents, and a Versachee bag. Who says there's no bargains ?

Some rich, bored lady(or man) will buy these ridiculous things thinking it give them status or happiness.

The reality is that these will end up in the outlets by January, and you can probably pick them up after they go on clearance there for about $15.00, which is what they should have cost to begin with. Same as every other ridiculous couture item.

A quick check online shows you can buy Hanes socks at 6 for $6. Perhaps they are a bit less fashionable, but a person could buy 500 pairs of socks and dispose of them after wearing. But I suppose if you're a thrifty fashionista, you could simply wear these socks for 500 days in a row. Things that are likely to be fashionable for mere weeks are best purchased at H&M or Forever 21.

The same morons who paid $500.00 for Brazilian flip-flops a few years back will be clawing at the doors for these.

Is it time time to bring the guillotines in?

Just profit off of their stupidity. Fuboy has a plan. Here's one for you: 1 Bedazzeler, a gross of Old Navy flip flops, an eBay account, and a b-list celebrity spotted wearing your goods.

    Spool of Alpaca yarn: $10

    Crochet hooks: $5

Book on how to crochet socks: $15

That would make a 14X markup from cost of materials to final product.

But hey, as long as they're trendy, some idiot will buy them.
