Trump Eyes Rye Playland

Rye Playland, 1932
Is Donald Trump keen on making Rye Playland his next undertaking? According to LoHud, execs from his company dropped by this week to get briefed on Westchester County's bid to reinvent the 100-acre amusement park/landmark.

Trump isn't commenting, and Westchester County officials say his company was there alongside many others (including Live Nation); as of now, no official proposals have been made.

The 82-year-old park has been on a downward spiral for decades, and they're seeking "visionary" proposals to get it back on top of its game. New ideas are expected to be presented when proposals are due in February. Will The Donald try to change the name to Trump Playland?

There's only two words for why Playland is failing - THE BRONX.

  • CaptainMXC

LMFAO..yeah it's only 20 miles away. Good job. See this is why NYC is failing...Newark, NJ..oh wait, too close. Um...Edison, NJ...sure, yup...that's the problem with NYC.

  • HBHB

Half hour train ride and they sell discount packages. You can get to playland from the bronx by train quicker than you can get to downtown manhattan.

  • CaptainMXC

Are you kidding me? Please blame the Bronx for everything. No one has ever bothered me in the Bronx, even at 2am, yet I have been accosted and harassed in Harlem & Mt. Vernon. Someone once called my bf a "White devil" in East Flatbush. How long have you lived in NYC?

  • robingee

"White devil?" Were you wearing a pith helmet and carrying a rifle and a bible?

  • CaptainMXC

LMAO, I wish. Nope, just a Haitian woman thinking Puertoricans are white. As for the thread, I certainly wasn't trying to one up him/her. I just find it absolutely ridiculous that he can blame the Bronx like he went around Playland with a pen & clipboard polling where everyone is from. "Hey loud ass jerks are you from the Bronx? Yeah I thought so" Do people from the Bronx wear shirts that say "Hey I'm from the Bronx"? Do they look a certain way that nails it that they are from there? It's such a huge and ridiculous assumption that the people making trouble in Playland are from the Bronx. It's like the time someone living near Soundview said they didn't want to go to the Hub because it was too dangerous....like do you have a clue?

I assert that the people bringing down Playland (if in fact such people do exist) are Martians who dress up like human beings and have a small dog whistle like device that repeats over and over again that they are from the Bronx. Ha! Prove me wrong!

  • HBHB

I've lived in THE BRONX my entire life (38 years). Had an aunt growing up who lived in Mamaroneck and that's why I went to Playland a lot. It wasn't I got older until I was able to realize what was going on. No doubt, Mt. Vernon and Yonkers has to take it's part in destroying the park but the Bronx has a much bigger piece of the pie. You obviously haven't been to Playland in quite sometime if you're acting this clueless to what I'm saying.

  • robingee

By the way, I love these "one-up" board conversations. I invented the Bronx! My mom is the Statue of Liberty and my dad is the Chrysler Building. I've lived on the corner of Illegal Handgun Drive and Drug Deal Lane since 1902!

the LAST thing Rye needs is Live Nation repurposing this place as a live events venue.. (traffic, noise and even more riff raff)

Rye also doesn't need Trump turning Playland into some sort of tacky bullshit 'luxury' living space..

  • jles

WOW. Speak for yourself. I would love to see a venue in Rye where Playland is. The last thing Rye needs is more suburban office parks.

It really is a shame what's happened to Playland. I spent so many nights hanging out there during my teenage years, and it definitely kept many of my friends and me from getting into trouble. 'Twas a fun place. Hope someone can bring it back.

  • jles

It is a shame, but it's also a testament to what happens when you have government try to run a business.

  • HBHB

Actually it's what happens when you live too close to the boroughs. I've been going to the park since the early 80's and watched the slow decline of playland year after year starting in the late 90's. In the early 00's you started seeing massive advertising in NYC. Metro North started pushing that ticket package big time. After that it spiraled out of control. The park is in Rye, one of New York's posh suburbs but take a walk through the park on any summer Saturday night and you'll think you got lost and wound up in South Bronx. Hood rats and white trash. They drove away all the paying business the park used to thrive on.

  • ides_of_march

I do believe Rye Playland is landmarked due to its Art Deco style. Not sure how much leeway that would give Trump to glitz up the place.

  • HBHB

It was declared a national landmark in 1987. It's actually the first amusement park in all of America.
