Is Brooklyn's Baseball Wall Coming Down?

baseballwall1010.jpg

Earlier this year an investigation of sorts was underway, as the Landmark Preservation Commission tried to determine whether a wall in Gowanus was worthy of landmark designation. Some believe the 20-foot wall—which stands at 3rd Avenue between 1st and 3rd Streets—is part of the original Dodgers stadium (aka Washington Park stadium). As of last December Con Ed was slated to demo some buildings by the wall, but said they would preserve the wall itself. But today April from Brooklyn sent us the above photo and noted, "the last remaining section of the oldest baseball stadium in Brooklyn (now part of a Con Ed facility in Gowanus) seems to be coming down."

We've contacted the company to see what gives, and will update if/when we hear back.

I work for Con Edison. I provided the Gothamist with information on this photo Monday afternoon. The original portion of the wall – the part that dates to when the Dodgers played in Washington Park - is staying up. That is what we have always intended. The photo is not of the original portion of the wall.

Also, our architects have been in touch with baseball and neighborhood historians on this matter. We have met with them at the location to make sure that nothing that is original to the old Washington Park is torn down.

I'm not Kevin, but the oldest pictures of the wall date it to when Washington Park was renovated for the Federal League Tip-Tops after the Dodgers moved into Ebbets Field in 1913.

    So What?

The team left Brooklyn over 2 or 3 generations ago and its just a wall today. Nobody is going to make pilgrimages just to see this.
