How The Meat Is "Prepared" At Whole Foods

101610wholefoods.jpg
A reader sent us a tip and photo from the Whole Foods at Union Square, where they were shopping with their baby (and stroller) this afternoon:

The customer elevator was out of order and the stroller was too big for the escalator so one of the customer service people escorted me through the basement, through the service elevator. To my shock and horror, while riding in the filthy elevator, I witnessed this.

The prepared foods (cooked, prepared turkey breasts) were being carted upstairs along side filthy garbage cans and employees with dirty dustbins...Really disgusting situation. This is how they transport the prepared foods from the kitchen to the counters. Notice one of the employee's ass rubbing up against the tray.

I can't believe this is how they operate. I am seriously rethinking purchasing cooked items from there ever again. The entire basement, elevator and area would surely get a failing grade from inspectors, considering the way they transport the food.

I took a quick snapshot. Needless to say, the employees were not happy about it.

okay A. I was at work at this whole foods on the day in question. B. That trash bin is full of washed out recyclables. C. that guy's got a nice ass.

  • Streetsweeper

    Kansas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • NannyState

    Nebraska!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • buryesa

I'd be up in arms if they were fishing chicken to serve from the bags... but c'mmon people. Maybe I am a bit callous to this as I worked in the service industry for a decade- but anyone horrified by this just seems like they have been one of the "lucky few" who never had to work a minimum wage job. Food and Garbage- you can't have one without the other.

  • Bakey

Clueless mom navigates pompous Graco stroller through busiest shop in Union Square.

Stroller's SUV-like girth and unforgiving 4-inch wide bubble wheels, combined with mom's inflated sense of self entitlement, results in horrific discovery of ass-rubbed chicken carcasses, as well as countless NYers being forced out of the sidewalk and and into oncoming traffic.

  • roger_sterling

    i like this headline better

  • HormelChavez

so you've had a bad experience with a mom and now you take it out on anyone with kids? There is the same ratio of assholes to civilized people with parents as there are with non-parents. Just because your mom fell into the asshole catagory doesn't mean that all Moms by definition do.

  • Bakey

Huh? "With Parents...With non-Parents"? WTF are you talking about? You must've graduated from Columbia Business School.

  • HormelChavez

Wow. The stupidity here is mind-boggling. First of all, anyone who hates someone because they have a stroller, or are a parent, is too stupid to take seriously.

Secondy, whole Foods wasn't really doing this woman "a favor". Their elevator was broken, and, by law, they must be accessible to strollers and wheelchairs. It is not uncommon for an average person to be unable to safely take a stroller down an escalator or stairs by themself.

Thirdly, to say that Whole Foods shouldn't have to abide by the health codes applicable to prepared foods simply because other establishments don't is absurd. Sounds like there are a bunch of anti-regulation Tea Party-type idiot trolls commenting here. Food safety is important whether it is always followed or not. A legit establishment like Whole Foods should be following the code by the book without exception. To blame the woman who took the photo for calling them out is unbelievable. The level of civility in this city is reaching new lows.

  • camera_club

that's why I don't eat meat. Your dead animal sees a lot of nasty shit on it's way to your plate

  • fuboy

And your organic veggies are grown in animal feces. So both of our foods are unclean.

  • Chrissy

That's downright hilarious. I would still eat the turkey it looks delicious. If you think your food is prepared in a sterile, clean environment you are misled. Even food we buy from the supermarket is allowed to have a certain number of droppings before they get called on it. If you want superclean food, start your own farm.

  • Manitoba

Stroller too big for escalator? Or stairs? That stroller is way too big then. How would this person get up/down the subway stairs?? No need for a stroller too big for an escalator, especially in NYC.

  • hotstepper

alright time to fess up, which one of you stroller-posse assholes took the picture? because there's a dirty leg of organic turkey i'd like to slap you with.

  • Potty Boy

Really, even if I don't like what's going on there in the picture, you just don't pull a douchebag move like that. They helped you to a working elevator, and this is what you do, you fucking douchebag internet pussy.

What the f is wrong with you people? You're complaining that the staff might get fired and that someone documented their disgust when seeing what happens in the back of the house? The only reason they'd be fired is because they did something wrong (which they did). And the argument that all food is made in unclean conditions is hardly an excuse. Using that logic, we should just eliminate all of the food inspectors all together, because, hey, it's all gross, we know that going in, and if we didn't want gross food, we'd move back to Kansas. So strange is this love for WF, a company you probably know VERY little about, except some nonsensical feeling of do-goodness you get from overpaying for food from them. Or is it the contempt for someone with a stroller that is the root of the disdain? Get over it, people have kids, kids travel in strollers. Even in NYC. Crazy, huh?

  • Clarice City

Nice going, you bitch. You probably just got that poor woman fired. Hope she doesn't have a family to support.

Anyone who has ever worked in the dining industry knows how dirty the food is anywhere you go. Even the cleanest dining establishments do really filthy things with food. Par for the course. You want your food served to you really fast? Then, you must deal with the dirty little shortcuts that the waiters and cooks have to make. Deal. Or roast your own bird.

  • robingee

If she was fired, then she was doing something wrong. If not, then no big deal! That's how it works, right?

  • NannyState

    Not In Whole Foods World...

  • Neverhaditsogood

I defy anything in New York, dead or alive, to avoid ass rubbing.

Watch this movie if you want to know where your food comes from

  • ghitor

read "Kitchen Confidential" if you really want to know what goes on in kitchen's all over the world.

  • Clarice City

    Ugh....the clam shack wedding.

  • if this bothers you then watch how they are breed, kept and killed in slaughterhouses.

  • StapleFace

I used to work at the Jamba Juice at that location, and they had to share their sushi fridge, freezer, and storage areas with us. The back area where all of the food is kept and prepared was disgusting, not to mention the poor hygiene displayed by 90% of the workers. But then again, what place in NYC doesn't have a few cockroaches, large and small.

  • JesusOurLord

What a piece of shit ignorant person and an irresponsible "news outlet".

You have NO IDEA if they were throwing that chicken out or putting it out.

The food should be covered while transported. That said, it's not next to a bin of raw sewage; it looks like package trash in clear recycling trash bags.

  • Streetsweeper

I've been reading Gothamist for a while now and I have to say this article made me register. WF does this lady a favor and now this is what WF gets. Here's a newsflash, You want clean food? buy and cook at home. Unbeleiveable how people bitch about everything, even favors. What'sworse is you saw that pile of trash and you decided to allow your baby next to it. For what? To get your organic cereal and soy milk. Go back to Kansas!

  • robingee

Go back to Kansas? Really? You're really saying that?

  • newyorkcitygal

I don't know about you, but I would still eat the sh*t out of that turkey. Looks good.

  • Guest

an edible bird's gut, which holds the sh*t, is indeed considered a fine delicacy in many ethnic cuisines. nevertheless, i still prefer mine completely shitless.

  • newyorkcitygal

Like I said, more for me! :) :)

  • seven

Jesus, grow up lady. Food doesn't have to be prepared and served in the sanitary equivalent of an operating room.

  • Stevennnn

The turkey looks good to me. Wish I can have some right about now.

good thing this woman doesn't know where Slurm comes from...

  • Matthew

    lmao

Whole Foods does this woman a solid and she starts acting like she just uncovered the lost 18 minutes of tape from the Nixon White House. Absurd.

  • NannyState

The key to enjoying food prepared by anyone else: Don't look.

BTW Whole Foods will probably fire everyone pictured on that elevator.

  • hotstepper

    i missed you!

into sandwiches ,I'll take Whole foods anyday for this

    transport horror.

Clean food ,is only in your own home.

  • exnyer

I don`t hear the turkeys union complaining.

  • nik13

That's nothing. It's no different in other stores & restaurants. Diners are the worst. Some hell-holes recycle leftovers.

I bet many of Gothamist posters have no problem eating "street -meat" from those ubiquitous push-carts.

  • wow 14th street

It's more the cut off crocodile head on

the cover paper that concerns me.

  • Cannibal

I thought that was a pet turtle

  • Brainwash

    I think that's a package of garnish.

  • Rocknrope

Good enough for baby, good enough for turkey.

Get over yourselves. The reason why people have so many allergies nowadays is because we're TOO goddamn clean. Believe me, everyone could probably do much better with a hookworm or two in our guts.

  • Subduction

Hmm -- A rare appearance from the hookworm lobby.

  • Matthew

In a way, Rocknrope is correct, hookworms have been considered as treatment for inflammatory bowel diseases and other autoimmune disorders of the gut...

  • OSN!

Do people realize the many hands and environments their food, prepared or otherwise, passes before it ends up in their mouth and stomach? Prepare most food properly and you'll be fine.

I'm surprised W.F. doesn't charge extra for the bum rub. Anybody willing to pay W.F. prices deserves it.

  • Brainwash

What prices? Their prices are fairly reasonable for the location and selection they provide. You'd pay the same kind of prices for organic food elsewhere in the city.

  • OSN!

    Girl please....W.F. is over-priced no ifs,ands,or butts ;-)

  • Gena

I used to work in the back of the house of one of the casinos in Atlantic City, and the kitchens and freight elevators were always less than clean. This is probably pretty common, and yet somehow we haven't all died of typhoid yet, or whatever people seem to think will happen if their food is in the same room as garbage.

  • don't eat turkey, the can't even produce naturally anymore. save a turkey.

  • ides_of_march

No doubt they reproduce with the aid of a turkey baster now.

They're still yummy with gravy and mashed potatoes.

  • Clarice City

Really. Way to bite the hand that feeds you.

  • JesusOurLord

What a piece of shit ignorant person with this picture and an irresponsible "news outlet" you are as usual.

You have NO IDEA if they were throwing that chicken out or putting it out.

  • Subduction

bklyn550 whn i read yr post @first i was all like "wahh?!" and thn i was all "no way!" but yr mad prose style made me like "he right!!!"

  • robingee

You're so against strollers that you side with food being transported in a gross way?

  • Brainwash

I was agreeing with you until the last sentence. That food should be properly covered while it's being transported.
