Court Orders Google To Reveal Commenter Identity

cyberbull1010.jpg Carla Franklin, the former model and Columbia grad that cried cyberbullying all the way to the courthouse, has gotten a Manhattan judge to order Google to identify the commenter who called her a "whore" on YouTube. According to the Daily News the court order gives Google "15 days to reveal any information it has on who posted the comments to YouTube videos that featured Franklin." Franklin had said she "suffered damages in the form of distress and mental anguish" from the mean comments. Welcome to the internet!

Or don't post whorish pics or videos of yourself on YouTube. Can't be that hard.

  • WhatHeSaid

I'm totally unimpressed. No intelligent person would even pursue such a thing unless they're after money (if not Google, someone else) or political fame. It seems the posts were taken down within hours of being put up.

Aged adults cannot be bullied in this manner and if they can they need to be put in a mental institution. Depressed users should get off the internet. Are you going after posters from Bulgaria or Nigeria next?

  • travesty98

This case is a bunch of BS and it's really sad. The fact that she may be either intelligent or beautiful is a smokescreen and had little to do w/ the merits of her claim. She's an adult, unemployed 35 year old woman.... not a 14 year old kid that is mentally fragile and young.

I really hope she's not lying about any of this because she can go to jail for it for filing false documents with the courts.

  • JamesLee

Well, I for one am impressed. So many people go off and hide in the shadows without facing their accuser. So many people turn to drugs, drinking. So many people don't do anything and then end up finding the hard way that it was a bigger problem than just comments on youtube.

I applaud this lady for sticking up for herself. Obviously, she's intelligent and definitely not a coward.

If there were more of her, there would be fewer bullies.

As a mother it scares me to raise a child in the cyber age. I'm wishful that this young ladies' actions will help encourage change.

  • Eugene

Right, that way you won't have to go through all that trouble of figuring out ways to raise your child right—the government can compensate for all your inadequacies as a parent. Just remember, when your child is a slave in the Yoonited Stayts uv Amerika, they can thank you for choosing identity divulging and oppression of free speech over dissent and democracy.

Is it me or do half of these comments in support of this crazy chick seem to be coming from Carla herself? My instincts tell me that she's lying about a whole lot and is behind the publicity stunt herself. Sounds like a broke crazy ex after fame and some guy w/ money that dumped her.

  • John L

I'm really glad she is doing this because too many people hide behind this cloak of anonymity online and say the most absurd and outlandish things, things that they wouldn't dare to say if their identity was attached to it. Kudos to Carla for standing up for her rights and not allowing herself to be cyber-bullied. Harassment of any kind, whether online, on the phone, in person, wherever and in any form should not be tolerated.

And anyone commenting on her looks is sad, pathetic and shallow.

This woman has two degrees, from two prestigious universities, and has every right to defend her reputation. She has worked very hard and it is only right that she demands her respect because she has earned it.

  • eastmeetswest

It's about time this caught on. More people should be held accountable for what they say behind their computer screens. She did the right thing (and she wasn't the first to do it so why dog her for it...)

  • Streetsmartz

    I guess the truth hurts?

  • Wilder125

Youtube. Where idiots can be idiots.

  • JacqueMehoff

when I post something on Youtube, not that I do because I don't have fast internet and I'm pretty private, I disable the comments section.

  • ollie195

I never heard of her before she started making a fuss. Now I know she may not be a w***e but, in my opinion, she is something else.

  • LouisianaManor

This isn't about being called "whore" by some random person. This is part of a stalking case that included cyberstalking. Just because it's online doesn't mean you can do whatever you like. Harrassment is harrassment. We are held accountable for our actions.

I applaud Carla for standing up to this bully and saying no more. Hopefully the next coward/stalker will think twice before participating in similar activities.

  • matty

felix the cat never ceases to amaze me O_o

  • :D

  • I guess anyone can call themselves a model these days. What the fuck did she model for? the Ugly stick?

  • BrooklynChic

Aww....coming from a man with cats and no girl...that is funny.

  • yea, i love pussy so deal with it.

  • BrooklynChic

Lol...Jenn, you're such an unfortunate writer, but I guess if you were better, you'd be at a real paper. Lol.

Carla is an amazingly smart and beautiful woman. She is not crying about cyberbullying...someone has been stalking her for years, and took things too far. He created a cyberspace shrine dedicated to her and did a lot of other sick stuff too. Everyone: don't believe everything you read, especially from talentless blog journalists. There is more to this story. Jen's a fat hater.

  • nycgurl

Uhh yea- Im sure Jen is really upset that she's not at a 'real paper'- especially when she sold gothamist to cablevision for about $6 million; she's a founding partner.

  • Carla??? I would take you more seriously if you didn't personally attack JC.

  • BrooklynChic

LOL. I'm not Carla...but Jen is fat. LOL. Sue me.

  • BrooklynChic

Let's see what you look like? LOL. Probably fat and ugly like Jen...no girlfriend....and no real education..and lives with a cat. LOL. Girls like Carla used to laugh in your face in HS...and you can now get back at them by calling them ugly. Awww...

  • youngpro

i dont know who you are, but i love you!

  • wtf?? youngpoo, what's that all about.

  • ah, i am not a girl and she is still fugly. seriously, my opinion but she looks like the elephant man. and girl lets not talk about that forehead. don't want me to go there now do you????

  • oh no, I think i am in deep trouble. :(

  • James

Damn, I'm glad Stephanie Adams didn't know about cyber bullying back in the day.

  • Gotham Extremist

i am not one to blame the "victom", but come on, going to court over an anonymous comment of friggin utube?

  • BrooklynChic

All non-trolls...please watch the video to hear the TRUTH for yourselves. She is 1) did not sue Google and 2) was not concerned about a few random comments.

    http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=6797340n

  • BrooklynChic

Well, that because she could NOT go to court if it was just about a comment. She was being harassed. Jen left a lot of detail out of the story...because she wanted to feed the "Gothamist" trolls. LOL. Carla's statement on the matter is below.

  • Splicer

Can't the whore very nice woman just get over it?

  • BrooklynChic

You don't know the who story...so how can you ask that question? If someone had been stalking you for years, would you just get over it?

  • Splicer

Obviously making jokes with html strikethroughs only works in the preview and not when you post. Thanks Gothamist for screwing up my line.

  • Guest

uh oh, your lawsuit is coming next!

  • theboneranger

isnt this what the "flag" feature is for on google?

someone should sue her for wasting resources, also for being stupid.

    oh shit.

  • theboneranger

ps: i said "stupid" not "whore"...
