A Barneys For Brooklyn

Get Roger Clark's look at Barney's!
Barneys Co-op has officially opened its doors in Brooklyn (and there's probably nothing the Park Slope Food Coop can do about it). NY1's Roger Clark was reporting from there earlier this morning, and Pat Kiernan Tweeted this photo of his co-worker after being done up by Barney's Creative Director Simon Doonan. (Sadly, they didn't let him keep the clothes.)

Clark says there's "definitely a trend" of Manhattan stores headed to the borough, and the NY Post is wondering if this means Atlantic Avenue could become the next Fashion Avenue (the presence of the store may very well draw in more high end stores).

One local told the paper, "All of Atlantic Avenue used to be Middle Eastern restaurants. There didn't used to be so many fun, interesting things around." And Doonan says, "The Co-op has always had a certain edgy sensibility. The fit with Brooklyn is a natural one." Not everyone is so excited, however—one Brooklyn College student says he "can't afford to even look" at Barneys... but Doonan promises it won't make the neighborhood pretentious, saying, "It's not like we're opening a Chanel." Racked has more photographs.

I live near there, too. I've lived in the area for 10 years. When I tell people that 10 years ago the most affordable apartment I could find was in Cobble Hill, they marvel. I do worry about Barneys' effect on Atlantic Ave. I love the middle eastern shops and shop at them frequently. I must say the Urban Outfitters on Atlantic is often fairly empty, and I wonder how long it can last. Neither the UO or Barneys seems quite right for the neighborhood- I would have thought something in-between in terms of expense and age targeted (like Anthropologie) would have fit the bill more.

  • Barney's sucks to not permitting him to keep the clothes. damn them.

    There goes the neighborhood.

I live in walking distance from this new Barney's. In this whole area the rents have already gone from being somewhat reasonably priced to obscene within the last ten years, the last thing we needed was a Barney's to drive the rents up even more.

NY1 is the random channel my cable box resets to and this morning when I turned it on they had a dude in a bright orange knit cap and a red flannel shirt talking about how Atlantic Avenue was the style center of Brooklyn. And he was a not a hipster wearing it ironically. It was awesome.
