UPDATE: This is the 3rd Ave line of the Manhattan Elevated Railway, running on tracks constructed alongside the Bowery, which is being utilized by both horse drawn and mechanical traffic. The photograph above was taken in 1922.

    1922? Wow, I would have expected at least a truck or two driving down the street by then.

    The Bowery prior to 1903. That's the last year that steam locomotives were used on the elevated lines. Let's say 1896.

    Elevated rail lines were popular in the 1880s... So, 1885?

    Another postcard view from 1909. Definitely looking north up the Bowery from right around Grand St.

    You really nailed the location with that postcard! The same sign appears in both the postcard and the photo. Bowery it is and near Grand Street. The bank is still there, but now it's Capitale. It still has the Bowery Savings Bank sign, though.
