Wind Turbines Getting Tested In Red Hook

101110wind.jpg The Perry Avenue Building got them. The Port Authority wants them in New York Harbor. Now, the city is planning to build a wind turbine atop a water tower on Van Dyke Street in Red Hook. However, the small turbine would generate enough energy a year to power just one home. Is it worth it?

Economic Development Corporation spokeswoman Vivian Liao told Brooklyn Paper that's what they're trying to test with the $12,500, city-financed project, and if it proves successful, more of the smaller turbines could be installed. But Debra Salomon of New York City College of Technology said what matters most is that they're testing them in the first place. "If everyone is afraid [to do something that could fail], then renewable energy will never happen." And if they do fail, well, at least Don Quixote can take care of them for us.

The Red Hook turbine will be like a gigantic billboard for clean energy - only it will be cheaper, employ more people to install, and be real.

Yes, its worth it. Its been "worth it" for decades.

There has been a wind turbine up and running across the Hudson by Liberty Science Center for years already.

    Yes! It's about time.

This country is missing out on being a leader on renewable energy because of our oil dependency and oil companies' lobbyists. We need to look forward and the future is in renewable energy and whoever masters that technology first will lead the world tomorrow.
