Video: "World's Happiest Boy" is a Subway Busker

Need a feel-good moment for your Friday? How about this video from NYC the Blog, showing the self-proclaimed "World's Happiest Boy" playing piano in the subway system. The blog notes that Jason Cordero, a Queens resident, can usually be found in Herald or Times Square (he's also been spotted with a grand piano, above ground.) And yes, his father keeps watch nearby.

Cordero is 12-years-old... which makes us wonder, who's the city's youngest busker?

Do you notice how so many people who play in the subway seem really happy? Like the old Professor who plays keyboards with the dancing dolls, or the 'Saw Lady' who always, always has a big smile on her face. I think the reason why they are so happy can be learned from Subway Music Blog where the 'Saw Lady' tells what happens when she plays in the subway.

About the piano boy - I remember years ago there was another kid (I think he was Russian) who played classical music on a keyboard in the subway while his father watched over him. Anybody knows what happened with him?

Hey. I'm interested in doing a story on Jason. I'm with MediaStorm www.mediastorm.com. Please have him email me ASAP at shreeyasinha@gmail.com if his family is willing. Thanks

    Does he go to school?

Sorry to ask such a trivial, irrelevant question, but I was just wondering.

This kid is fascinating and maybe if other kids see him playing like that they'll get inspired to learn how to play too.

I'll definitely give them some money. they obviously need it, if they're out there playing the piano in the street. There's a lot worst things people can do for money. The father is exploiting him just as the parents of Lindsay Lohan exploited her yet no one was boycotting her movies because of it. Isn't anybody (ie Disney) that uses children exploiting them to some extent? The difference is this family apparently really needs the money. Stop being so cynical and help someone for a change.

This is Beethoven's 5th Symphony, or most of the first movement anyway.

Nice work, it's definitely him playing. It's odd that he has difficulties with the simple parts and rips the difficult parts to shreds.

    Cool, thanks!

  • youngpro

yeah, valerio this is b's 5th, at U.S. it's always turkish march- he likes to le switch it up evidently.

he has an acute affinity for german musicians.

***do NOT give this kid money. i know, it sounds bad but nothing like being exploited by your dad and being a breadwinner for your family at age 12. the dad literally does nothing but stands guard over the gawkers and closely watches the tips pour in while he son taps away.

i used to see this kid a lot at Union Square along the wall just as you enter the food emporium side. did they kick him out instead for the soul singing ex-gangbangers? and yes, it's always Turkish March, over and over, and over.

also, i wonder if, since it's a synthesizer keyboard, those tunes are pre-programmed to play the right notes to the song regardless of the keys you hit, making it only look like youre some virtuoso, i ask because i saw someone try to accompany him once after taking a photo with him and was quickly pushed away by the dad seemingly in fear of giving up the jig!

This child impresses me much more.

  • mcsoxerhoff

He's at the 59th & Lex N/Q/R station all the time, and like HowBoutDemCowboys said he plays about 2 or 3 songs exactly the same over and over again. It's just rote memorization and they last just long enough for the people on the platform to leave and a new group to come down the stairs.

  • eflash

congratulations! you've figured out what buskers do!

  • kazubes

Theres a kid in Central Park along the literary walk who juggles on a unicycle and does all sorts of wonky tricks. I would imagine they are more or less of similar age.

  • youngpro

    it's the same kid!

  • beardofbees

I see no happiness there. And wonder why? He's shut off from the sun and people his own age. He should be birddogging chicks and banging beaver.

  • Guest

I've seen this kid. He can play the hell out of that keyboard, but he's just reciting the same old boring cliche songs with no embellishment or pizzazz.
