Operation Rail Safe Drill Today

NYPD officers at Penn Station this past April (AP)

Expect to see more various law enforcement authorities during your commute, if you travel through the big transit hubs, because there's an Operation Railsafe surge today. According to WABC 7, "The greatest concentration will be at major rail hubs like Penn Station and Grand Central terminal. NYPD officers will also ride the rails with bomb sniffing dogs, and bag checkpoints are possible. Meanwhile, Amtrak will have increased uniformed police visible along major routes and heightened station patrols."

Officials say the surge has been in the works for a while (it's allegedly not due to the Al Qaeda concerns in Europe), and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said, "Forty percent of the attack in the last 20 years have been against transit facilities."

A total waste of money and unnecessary way to inflict even more fear into an already anxious American public.

There's really no stopping a person who's willing to die. A person with a bomb in a backpack can walk right up to all these clowns and blow himself up before they even have a chance to shoot him. This show of force doesn't impress, scare or deter terrorists but it does create anxiety and maybe a false sense of security for residents. Yes we need some security but at some point it's just overkill and doesn't make us any safer.

Terrorists can bomb or release a lethal gas attack on the trains every day of the week, they haven't because they haven't wanted to, plain and simple.

This country needs to stop spending so much on counterterrorism and wars and start investing on education and the future. We're our own worst enemies.

Was it overkill that caught the times square bomber? He was caught in like 48 hours I thought that was damn impressive. Other terrorists have been caught don't you remember? There was some conspiracy to bomb the subway system that was foiled like a year ago or so... not sure. It's hard to remember the ones that got caught because nothing happened so it doesn't stand out in your mind.

  • potsmoker

and he was caught because he used a vehicle he personally purchased rather than stole, he was found because he used the same phone # for the buyer that he used in his citizenship application.

did you forget, thats prob 30 seconds worth of research for a Federal agent, it wasnt due to clowns dressed up like in the photo.

  • potsmoker

yeah genius but no terrorist was ever caught because of some guys standing around holding machine guns analyzing the crowds on the subway.

the only example we actually have to learn from is the brazilian guy shot dead in the head point blank multiple times on the subway in london.

is that the thing you remember? does that stand out in your mind,,,nah because you think brown people are prob terrorists and youd rather have the nypd be safe than sorry if some thug in his costume decides someone is a bomber...put two slugs in the head and one in the heart as trained, as long as thes white cops will never do that to a white wall streeter carrying a breifcase,

and the next one will probably be a white christian terrorist like tim mcveigh dressed like you guessed it, a wallstreeter holding a breifcase...

good luck with your crazy ideas when that happens.

  • potsmoker

its obvious they are not tasty targets, any bomber could take the train from the outer borughs and blow themselves up in a crowded subway car or at a clogged exit or some long line at a broken metrocard machine, simple terrorist theory 101, if the feds want to visit you for stating the obvious then well then the feds are a waste of money just like this theatrical show of force to pacify the rah rah rah usa usa chanters who want martial law to stop duh terrahrusts...

    fools, all of them.

  • Gotham Extremist

Why do you think they all have their finger at the trigger? Like they are ready to spray 50 rounds into the crown at any given moment.

  • Jamie McDonald

Look carefully - they're not on the trigger at all.

  • jaycjay

Yep. Both cops in the photo appear to have their fingers properly indexed.

  • Kreo

It is standard rifle holding grip, as long as your palm is on the handgrip, there is no space for the index finger but on the trigger. Do not worry though the safety is on, and the clips are probably empty. Their presence is intended to be a deterrent.

  • Såkandulæredet

I knew I'd see a ton of anti-police comments on here from the ungratefuls.

  • theboneranger

Just kidding, Sarge! Lots of love for all the good cops.

  • theboneranger

its one of those show of force parades, nothing to be concerned about!

  • Peter

Whenever I see a group of these cowards, er, cops with their helmets and machine guns, I think of what a tasty target they'd make for a suicide bomber.

  • longacre

Congrats, you just won a visit from the Feds!

  • MidC Frank

Not sure what's scarier -- the thought of being victim of a terorist, or getting shot by one of these morons blowing off their machine guns in a subterranean Rambo moment.

  • jaycjay

"morons blowing off their machine guns"

They're not "machine guns". They're selective-fire assault rifles, without full automatic fire capability.

  • Love Your Life

Shoot? Bombs vs guns? They are going to blow up just like the rest of us. A complete waste of money!

  • Smitty025

That's honestly something I think about every time I see them. (Besides the fact that it's just a huge waste of money.) For me, it's definitely being caught in the crossfire of one of these guys with their toys.
