New Verizon iPhone On The Way

vphone1010.jpg The masses of iPhone holders that are fed up with dropped calls and poor service from the gadget's only service provider, AT&T, will be happy to know that Apple will start producing Verizon Wireless iPhones by late 2010. That's this year! The Wall Street Journal reports that "the new iPhone would be similar in design to the iPhone 4 currently sold by AT&T Inc. but would be based on an alternative wireless technology called CDMA used by Verizon. The phone, for which Qualcomm Inc. is providing a key chip, is expected to be released in the first quarter of next year." Also, there's already an iPhone 5 on the way—though Apple isn't commenting on any of this.

Before people rush out to get this phone, realize that CDMA technology aka Verizon and Sprint works in barely any other countries unlike quad-band GSM (AT&T & TMobile) which is a global standard. That means forget about using your new Verizon iPhone in places like Europe UNLESS they make it a hybrid version. CDMA = ipod touch in most countries outside North America.

PS if a GSM phone is unlocked, it can even be used with a foreign sim card or local telephone number with local rates. Stuff to think about before you sell your old iPhone... you may want to keep it around for use on trips.

All that being said... the conundrum is that CDMA tech works better than GSM in this country.

This article a misleading recap of the WSJ article.

The article says that Apple is making a CDMA version of the iPhone, which is factual.

The article also says that CDMA phones are what Verizon uses. That's also factual.

The conclusion that those two facts is that Verizon is going offer the iPhone is speculation, and the WSJ article doesn't say that.

CDMA phones are used in other places besides the US, so the fact that Apple is making them doesn't mean it's for Verizon's network.

But it would mean if Apple's exclusivity deal with AT&T ended, Apple would have hardware ready to use on Verizon's network, if those two parties decided to enter into an agreement.

So there's one less obstacle for the iPhone to be offered by Verizon, but it is not a done deal by any stretch.

Okay, so firstly this is speculation and you shouldn't be printing it as fact. WSJ has said this several times and has yet to score with it. VZW has stated that if an iPhone gets ported to Verizon that it will be on LTE and not CDMA.

"an alternative wireless technology called CDMA used by Verizon" Darling, CDMA is not an alternative. It has been the standard in the US far longer than GSM and it's technology is far more stable than GSM. You get better penetration and a more continuous signal while at slightly slower data speeds.

I'm not going to bother explaining LTE because you likely will get doe eyed and give me the "Whaaaat?"

Also, what key chip by Qualcomm? People who know their shit will think CPU/Snapdragon and Apple will certainly not be putting that in a handset after buying a company to produce their A4's.

Lastly, as pointed out by another reader with decent comprehension, Verizon doesn't manufacture phones for anyone let alone iPhones.

I think the article uses the word alternative as "another" and not as like "alternative" music or something like that.

AT&T iPhone service failed because the popularity of a phone demanding too much data overwhelmed the system. Don't be too sure any other carrier won't have the same problems.

  • TeddyNYC

It's only a matter of time before a second carrier gets the iPhone. Could be this January, could be later. I'm just curious if the Verizon iPhone (if it's Verizon) is just a slightly different version of the iPhone 4 or as rumored, something better.

    Well it's about time!

But I need a Sprint iPhone!

  • yg

    HTC Evo? ;)

  • jaycjay

Wow! Big news! Or, it was back in January, anyway:

On another note, that "Verizon will start mass producing iPhones" thing is... well, just a bizarre conclusion to draw from the WSJ article. Sure, Apple is going to start letting other companies manufacture iPhones. Probably iPods, too, why not just let other companies make them? And if Dell were allowed to make some iMacs, everybody could be happy!

  • putch

When I load that WSJ article there's an ad saying there's a bridge for sale in brooklyn!!!1!!1!

  • Rocknrope

    Freakin finally.

  • wow, rumors presented as facts, and people actually believing it to boot.

    ahhhh gothamist.

  • longacre

This is the strongest report so far. With new tech involved, it means more places for leaks, i.e. from Qualcomm who makes the CDMA chips.

  • theboneranger

"AT&T, will be happy to know that Verizon will start mass producing iPhones by late 2010"

I didnt know Verizon made iPhones

What can I say, Jen Calson fucked up. Get over it.
