The Art Of Being A Squeegee Man

2010_09_squeegee.jpg The NY Times looked at the diminishing ranks of the squeegee man, aka one of former mayor Giuliani's many banes. One squeegee man in Harlem said, "I don’t see it as panhandling. It’s a service for a service — better than shaking a cup... Anyone can clean a windshield. The trick is, you have to know how to talk to them. It’s all in your personality. If it’s a guy, you make them laugh. If it’s a female, you have to say something like, ‘Hey, you got a beautiful smile.’"

"You got a Benz, I got a busket!"

Guy or girl, always stare (shake down) the subject (victim) down with 'crazy eyes'(unspoken threats).

Part of the old charm my ass. Squeegee guys were the scourge of every underpass and or major intersection for years before the crackdown. They would come running up regardless of your refusal and either start washing with their filthy water and squeegees or hustle you for money to not make your window filthy.

Maybe its cute and nostalgic for transplants though who think this is fairyland, the featured squeegee man is happy to play along

“You get people who still think this is bad old New York,” he said. “Times have changed. No one’s getting carjacked, no one’s getting robbed in broad daylight in traffic.”

Leave the poor squeegie guy alone... Just wave him on if you dont want it. My dad used to turn on the windshield wipers back in the 80's to make them go away.

Over the summer some friends of mine were visiting from out of town, and we got stopped by a squeegie guy over on the west side drive by the convention center. I hadn't seen one in that part of town for so long it was like spotting a black panther in Florida. He so funny and eager to wash the windows we let him even though it might have made them dirtier because my friends thought it was "so New York".

There are so many people out there just begging for change it's easy to be jaded towards them, (I almost never give away money) but at least these guys are offering a service, no matter how trivial, instead of just asking for a handout.

These guys are so rare, just leave them be! Part of the old charm.

Nothing like the old charm of having a filthy, drunken bum wipe a dirty diaper across your clean windshield and demand cash to make you wish you could drink and drive.

They're just trying to get by.

They could be robbing and stealing, which would you prefer?

There are plenty of programs for the homeless...shelters, food, rehab....they choose to live on the street.

  • Are there no prisons? Are there no workhouses? And if they should rather die, perhaps they should hurry up and do it and decrease the surplus population.

  • Brainwash

    Sexist bastards.

    bullshit. it's a shakedown, plain & simple.

  • JesusOurLord

How is it a shakedown, cockboy?

  • Petey

Why don't you drive by them with an open window, then give them nothing after they clean your windows.

  • exnyer

They spit at your windshield...if they miss and your window is open guess what happens??

  • JesusOurLord

I've done it many times. I say no when they come up to the car, and then I drive away. What the fuck.
