Owner Thought Pet Gator Was Just A Big Lizard

100310gator.jpg Alpine Wine & Liquor owner Nancy Corcione and her employees had no idea that their 3-foot-long alligator, Nancy, was actually an alligator, but rather thought it was a large monitor lizard. A lizard that ate 45 goldfish a day out of your hands and had to live in a small pool. "I didn't think it was illegal. We had no clue," Corcione told the Daily News.

The folks at the Long Island liquor store cared for the gator after an employee brought it in about three months ago, but the Suffolk County SPCA seized the pet and ticketed Corcione for possession of an illegal animal. This is not the kind of pet you should have," he told Newsday (paywall). "They're dangerous. It's a wild animal." Nancy was sent to an animal sanctuary in Massachusetts.
