Subways Not As Bad As Last Weekend, Still Awful

100210service.jpg Though NYC Transit won't have to organize the "largest shuttle bus operation ever" like they did last weekend, getting around with the subway will still be a hassle this weekend. Some of the changes include:

  • 1 trains skip 28, 23 and 18 Streets in both directions, and there are no trains between 242 Street and 168 Street and 14 Street and South Ferry.
  • Woodlawn-bound 4 trains run local from Utica to Atlantic Avenues.
  • Shuttle buses replace A trains from Broad Channel to Far Rockaway.
  • Coney Island-bound D trains are running the N line from 36 Street to Stillwell Avenue.
  • Shuttle buses replace L trains from Lorimer Street to Myrtle-Wyckoff Avenue.
  • Bay Ridge-bound R trains are rerouted over the Manhattan Bridge from Canal Street to DeKalb Avenue.

The MTA says in a statement, "This work is part of NYC Transit's ongoing $11.2 billion Capital Rebuilding Program aimed at upgrading and maintaining our tracks, stations and signal systems in order to continue to provide our customers with safe and reliable service." But as one straphanger put it last weekend, "I'm very irritated. Really mad. What's the point of me buying this MetroCard? This is a lie." Are you fed up with the crappy weekend service, or have you just surrendered to the inevitability that the subways may never run well again?

    $11.2 billion?

That's equal to the GDP of the whole state of Wyoming.

How do they burn through so much money?

17% of the budget alone is allocated to debt service because assholes like Pataki told the MTA to put their capital program on credit rather than actually allocating funds for it.

Unless this entire project is audited by the FBI, Im going to continue to believe that the 11 BILLION (!!!!) is mostly being stolen or grossly mismanaged by the clowns who run the corrupt and inept MTA. I wonder if this includes the multi-BILLION for the non-working cameras and PA systems?

Bad to worse subway weekend work will also be Nov 13 & 14 and Nov 20 & 21 especially if you ride the F train south of Jay Street

  • Brainwash

When this level of disruption is in effect all the lines should be free.
