Times Square Will Now Celebrate Midnight Every Night

The Times Square Advertising Coalition isn't satisfied with just one midnight blowout each year, they want to make it a daily event. According to the NY Times, midnight will be special all 365 days of the year starting in 2011, when the coalition introduces a nightly “Times Square Midnight Moment."

While you shouldn't expect the drunken hordes covered in confetti (or maybe you should?), you can expect to see digital billboards illuminated. Oooh, ahhhh. But aren't the digital billboards always illuminated? According to the paper, the goal is to add “a new must-see attraction” to the area that will "offer a bright end to each evening in Times Square."

Someone start making novelty glasses for every individual date!

As a City tour guide it's great, something new to do, just another reason to go see Longacre Square!

    Sounds good for tourists.

I guess we should celebrate "Another Day" everyday.\

    3...2...1 Hooray! It's Tuesday!!!

Times Square: now exactly like Disney Land.

If they want to attract people how about not putting suburban cookie cutter stores in there? Billabong? Quicksilver? Bo-ring.

Whats the point? Im not going to be able to have my happy new years cigar in times square because it will be illegal to smoke in pedestrian plazas in 2011. How can I celebrate midnight without a good smoke?

  • exnyer

It sounds good..... until some distracted/drunk driver comes along mows down the crowd.

theres fewer balls dropping in times square nowadays

  • Spirit of 76

    What, no nightly ball drop?

  • Ed

There probably is a way to do this that it would actually be cool, but I just don't see it.

They could always drag out Dick Clark every night to slur, "Happy New Day!"

  • The Pickler

Better yet, you record strokey Dick schlurring out a new phrase for each day of the week (and holidays), and make an animatronic Dick Clark that pops out of a building like a cuckoo bird to yell at the masses at midnight.

"Anudder T'woosday ish come and pasht. 10,9,8...3,2,1 Happy Whensday, Sheptembers Shix!"

Meanwhile, at T. G. I. McScratchy's Goodtime Foodrinkery, Homer and

Marge have donned party hats and are dancing to music played by a live

    band.

    Bandleader: Welcome to T. G. I. McScratchy's where it's constantly New

Year's Eve. Here we go again! Three, two, one!

    Everyone: Happy new year!

    ["Auld Lang Syne" starts up]

[a waiter walks up with champagne glasses]

Marge: It must be wonderful to ring in the new year over and over

    and over.

    Waiter: Please, kill me.

(At T.G.I. McScratchy's, Marge and Homer dance as other patrons do.)

Bandleader: Welcome to T.G.I. McScratchy's, where it's constantly New Years' Eve! Here we go again! Three, two, one! (Starts playing violin)

    Everyone: Happy New Year!

(The band plays "Auld Lang Syne" as a waiter comes up to Homer and Marge.)

Marge: It must be wonderful to ring in the new year over and over and over!

    Waiter: Please kill me.

    Awesome use of non-renewable resources!

Midnight Moment? Sounds like a promo for a new TV show this fall on (insert network here).

    Lamest. Shit. Ever.

  • soxinthecity

Is it April Fools Day already?

  • Kojak

Meh. Ok. I guess we can also do Laser Light Shows too. Hong Kong does that.

  • Eric

Hong Kong's is a citywide event, pretty cool how they use the entire skyline.
