Suspect Charged With Murder After Brooklyn Bar Stabbing

Daniel Pagan (NY1)
After brutally stabbing and killing an off-duty bartender, as well as injuring a bartender, outside of the Branded Saloon in Prospect Heights, suspect Daniel Pagan has now been charged with murder, attempted murder and criminal possession of a weapon. According to NY1, police believe that Pagan "became enraged when he thought [Chai Eun] Hillmann came into physical contact with his wife," so he allegedly attacked Hillmann, who died from his wounds.

Pagan, who lives around the corner from the bar, previously served nine years in prison after killing one person and injuring another in 1991, was released in 2000 and on parole until 2006. The bar owner's wife said that Hillmann and Pagan's altercation actually started over their respective dogs, "Chai was actually trying to separate the dogs, he didn't want his dog to get hurt. And some words were exchanged and a scuffle ensued. And within second this man's pulling out a huge knife and stabbing."

Bartender Daniel Hultquist was stabbed in the neck when he tried to break up the fight (he's recovering at a hospital). The Post reports that Hillman's father is filled with anger towards his killer and said, "If the guy was in front of me right now, I would probably kill him." And one resident told the Brooklyn Paper, "I’ve been seeing a lot of fights on the street lately. But I’m totally surprised something that violent happened here."

I am sure many of you may have heard the news regarding the tragedy that I was involved in last Thursday (Sept 30, 2010). I deeply regret the events of that morning which snowballed out of control within the blink of an eye and resulted in the death of Chai Eun. Please know that I held no prior malice towards this person, neither did I go there with the intent to do anyone or myself any harm, the unfortunate events that unfolded that morning were the result of a misunderstanding gone wrong and escalated to a point where I felt I had to act in self-defense not only to protect myself but my wife. As a result of this tragedy, the accounts as told to the press has painted me in an obscured and negative picture by omitting events that unfolded that early morning, and many events and misappropriations of my youth have also unfolded. I do not begin to make excuses for my previous mistakes and I have served my time for them and will live with the weight of what I have done for the rest of my life. However in this matter I am asking for help from those who know me and know that with what I stood to lose, I would not have acted unless I felt my safety and that of my wife was threatened. If at all possible I am asking for your generous support in towards my legal defense in an effort to make sure that the events of that morning are accurately recounted, by sending donations via PayPal to divdandon@hotmail.com. Please pray for my family and the family of the deceased. Thank you all.

Look here for additional updates in the days ahead.

I was there that fateful night Mr Pagan.

A negative picture is all that can be painted I am afraid.

Your stupid actions resulted in the death of a good man, no if's, no but's, no excuses can paint a different picture.

May your email account be spammed to oblivion, for it is the very least I can do.

Disgusting excuses. You killed a man, and you've killed before. How many more will you kill before your evil bloodlust is sated?

Hey- Cut this guy some slack!

I mean, when I get into any altercation with someone- the very first thing I think of is killing them!! C'mon- who doesn't?! I carry a knife at all times- and I even carry a spare knife incase something happens to my primary knife!

I also carry the business card of my defense lawyer- because you never know when someone will take exception to being killed and actually call the cops or ever sue!

BTW- Can anyone give me the name and address of 'his wife'- the poor thing- I think she may be in need of some. . . 'comforting'!

(I also think that his dog should be euthanized- and if he goes to jail again. . . I hope they don't take away his color television privileges! I mean- give this guy a break!)

In the initial paragraph, it stated..."According to NY1, police believe that Pagan 'became enraged when he thought [Chai Eun] Hillmann came into physical contact with his wife,' so he allegedly attacked Hillmann, who died from his wounds..."

But I clicked on the link and and watched the news clip, and the bar owner talks about how the dead guy was trying to separate their two dogs, then things got heated and Pagan killed him.

Does that mean Pagan was married to his dog? That bitch was the cause of this tragedy.

Animals like this belong locked up for life, as he should have been when he already ended one person's life. Just like an animal, he operated on rage and impulse, rather than the higher order of thought, logic, and consequence. How is he going to "protect" his wife now when he's going to get another 25 years?

Thanks for our justice system, he'll probably serve another 10 years and get out in time to end someone else's life.

they caught this guy quick, before the late news started.

It's been a bad week, hopefully next week with be better. not for me but for all the others.

He'll be in jail for a long time then he can worry about who's touching his wife while he's upstate.

Manslaughter ...it is a different crime, this seems to be manslaughter too, if the vic was registered with the state to run a school, vic's mere registration means that the use of force he displayed is something that should be considered by the jury..

Now..all ya little out of townies know this, that crap they taught ya in ya little redneck's town Dojo aint jack, I would keep it to yourself and not act like a hard rock in that hood...ya aint got the experience...

yeah ya put the husband in jail, that kid got family and if he is Puerto Rican they is coming back -- brothers and in-laws gonna do something and that bar is gonna get sued lovely...for sure by both parties...

Being puerto rican and very well trained in the arts myself, I would have cracked that neck and forced in the bread baskets, while holding the obvious stong arm on a guy so that he would NOT be able to use it for anything. I have disarmed many attackers here in NYC got knives, shanks, and IDs to prove it --- this hood would have been just another one of them..I could use another steak knife....

This is more like a fail for the guys who could not defend themselves in a two on one with a knife,...all that training and could not manage getting a fleah wound in return for disarming a person...

Dont be a menace while sipping your juice in the hood, ...........and seriously act like ya know..

Peace to all the warriors out there, in the ground and alive but dead in the system.

  • Rocknrope

Very well trained in the arts? What art would that be, exactly? Flower-arranging?

  • nicemarmot

The art of making asinine comments on blogs?

  • Guest

well, i'm slightly behind troy in "the art of provoking really random people".

  • wobbleSmith

cool, i'll be keeping a look out for the hopefully inevitable headline "SMACK TALKING GOTHAMIST COMMENTER GETS STABBED FOR ACTIN LIKE HE KNOW"

  • Troy

too late there wobble, sometimes you get stabbed but you walk away with a little spillage, big whoop.. been there a few times...ohh in the big bad 80s too...wooo...

how you are trained 2 deal with it ...priceless..

  • Rocknrope
