Citizens of the city, the powers that be are going to be spending $27.5MM on changing all of the capital letters on our signs to lower case letters. The change is being made thanks to a federal regulation change in the new Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, reports the Daily News, who lambasted the idea on their cover today.
The paper notes that the lowercase letters will be in place by 2018, and all fonts will be changed to Clearview. According to the Federal Highway Administration, the switch is to improve safety, because allegedly drivers can identify with the words more quickly when in this format. But as one Manhattan man told the paper, "If it's such a pressing safety issue, why won't it be done until 2018?" (Some signs have already been replaced, however.)
The Department of Transportation says that any additional cost to the city will be "marginal" because it receives state funding for routine sign repairs and replacement, and with the typical life of a sign lasting about 10 years, many would have to be replaced soon anyway. According to the NY Post, however, the Highway Administration acknowledged that New York "opposed the change [because] the amount of improvement in legibility did not justify the cost."

>>>So this has me wondering, what typeface does the NYCDOT currently use for the signs?
Highway Gothic. They are changing to Clearview, which is a much uglier font. The lowercase letters in both fonts aren't that great, and both fonts look best in all caps on street signs. The new upper/lower signs look amateurish.
how about public transport funding first so you can actually get to the signs to read them! idiocracy meets backwardsocracy.

just digging a deeper hole.
we outsource our labor to third world countries who in turn produce toxic lead filled toys which are shipped back to America for demon retailers to gouge the working class man whose budget is strained from losing his job and insurance and having to pay for overpriced perscribed drugs his kids needs for the malfunctions caused by toxic toys.
Now with the economy collapsed from overspending and greedy fat cats' corruption, all of the workers who have been forced over the years to work for big shady conglomerates (because they mafia bullied everyone else) are unemployed, and the third world countries we are forced to buy everything we use from are thriving.. BECAUSE THEY HAVE ALL THE JOBS.
We are on our way to becoming a third world nation. The fact that our own government is wasting money on this bullshit is mind blowing. Our signs are fine. They EXIST. Ever go to Venice? It's fucked. This is bullshit. I'm moving to ... (not here. somewhere that freedom is legal!)

Oh God, shut up.
Talk about not reading the piece.

It might be a good idea to change the signs to lowercase ... however most of our streets are NUMBERED!!!
So that's $27m for how many signs???

So this has me wondering, what typeface does the NYCDOT currently use for the signs?
Huffy6241
Many of the street signs in NYC are just numbers anyway.

And this is where our tax revenues go, towards stupidity with a capital S.

Whenever I go out West, I always wonder how is it they haven't changed their signs over the years?
LA has blue signs with white lettering and SF has white signs with black lettering.
Why can't we keep our signs as is?
GOP
Do ppl realize that the $27.5m will create jobs to manufacturers of street signs? The money doesn't just go into thin air.

Does the GOP realize how many jobs would be created with the legalization of marijuana? Or do they hate marijuana because it makes people think about how stupid bigotry is and how dumb it is to spend more money on defense than education?

Your analogy fails.

Awesome comeback and even better references as to why my analogy supposedly fails. You'll go far with that kind of witty repartee.

You're comparing the creating of street signs with the legalization of weed. Do you need more of an explanation as to why your analogy fails? Please write an analogy that works and I will humor you with a comeback that requires more words.

I wasn't comparing the two at all. I was contrasting the fact that you wanted to show how this ridiculous government spending was creating jobs with the fact that the GOP is instrumental in keeping marijuana illegal, and thus robbing our great citizens of jobs and a recreational activity that is much less dangerous than drinking alcohol. I know you want to think of yourself as smart, so try and understand this before you respond and make more of an ass of yourself. If you can't figure it out, you're either a complete jackass, or you're just being a stereotypical GOP jerk.
