ADL Slams Roger Waters For Star of David Bombs In "Wall"

Here's a list of symbols seen dropping like bombs from a plane in a video projection during Roger Water's The Wall concert: Crosses, Muslim crescents, Shell logos, dollar signs, Hammer & Sickles, Mercedes Benz logos, and the Star of David. And here's the number of angry press releases issued to protest the imagery: One. Care to guess who's outraged? Click through for the video and the answer, which may not shock you (especially since we put it in the headline of this post).

Abe Foxman at The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has fired off a press release declaring it anti-Semetic. "It is outrageous that Roger Waters has chosen to use the juxtaposition of a Jewish Star of David with the symbol of dollar signs. While he insists that his intent was to criticize Israel's West Bank security fence, the use of such imagery in a concert setting seems to leave the message open to interpretation, and the meaning could easily be misunderstood as a comment about Jews and money."

For analysis, we turn to Gothamist's in-house Rabbinical scholar Ben Yakas, who tells us, "The order he put everything in is unfortunate, but I don't think it was necessarily a direct 'Jews and their money,' anti-Semitic thing. It's too vague for that. He has crosses and crescents and fuel company logos all raining down together. It's just a bad juxtaposition. What's more offensive is the song; it's almost a rip off of Ruby Tuesday's chorus!"

What do you think? Is the Star of David bomb imagery more offensive than the Israeli policy of building new settlements in Palestinian territory? Or is it more offensive than Yakas's unsolicited and unappreciated criticism of Pink Floyd? Ultimately, none of this can be more offensive than how much scalpers are charging for tickets for Waters's upcoming shows at Madison Square Garden. Anyone want to help us out with a pair for face value? We'll make you famous, like Yakas!

Self-consciousness is an acute sense of self-awareness. It is a preoccupation with oneself.

    I see stars everywhere! OMG!

"...the use of such imagery in a concert setting seems to leave the message open to interpretation, and the meaning could easily be misunderstood as a comment about Jews and money."

    So? what's the problem again??

    I miss Groucho.

There's something to be said for choosing your battles wisely. Way to drop a fail bomb, ADL.

  • poxod

The idiot Foxman destroyed the ADL's credibility after his comments on the Park51 project. A year ago I might have agreed with them but now I just roll my eyes.

  • matty

Foxman is like the Jewish Jessie Jackson. Get a grip, ADL.

  • JenChungsBaby

How did Abe Foxman come to know about the video imagery at a Roger Waters concert anyway? Was he at home in 1979 memorizing "Did did did you see the frightened ones?"

  • DavidPSmith

Fauxman's a bit out of his league on this one. He seems to not realize that Floyd, after all these decades, has still not become UN-popular.

You should wait a few more decades, Fauxman, until all the old Floyd fans are dead. Then you can try to bash the newbies who's minds are easily changed.

But, beware. Pink Floyd has already begun to open those minds and, in a few more decades, you will not have a chance against them, either.

Hmmm. What to choose... Impossibility number one or impossibility number two?

Maybe you should take off your tattered gloves and sit this one out.

  • Politburo

So the ADL, which claims to stand for "fair treatment to all", has no problems with the crosses and crescents?

  • Sketto

Hey! Stop being so rational. Where's the fun in that?

  • robingee

Abe Foxman, Sausage King of Chicago?

I don't know, I like Roger Waters and The Wall a lot, but dropping religious symbols and corporate logos from a plane as bombs seems so cliche.

"What do you think? Is the Star of David bomb imagery more offensive than the Israeli policy of building new settlements in Palestinian territory?"

What do I think? I think you should quit religion-baiting for hits and do what this site set out to do - which I assumed was report on the news about New York City, not debate international policy.

  • mns

Wait - this is religion baiting? Come on. This is a legit post, and partially because of how hilariously pathetic both Roger Waters - how freaking unimaginative! - and Abe Foxman - who's doing the religion baiting? - are acting.

Nice fat targets perfect for a blog post.

Both the SPLC and the ADL traffic in hysteria and will slap a hate group label even on organizations and people who have opposing views on immigration, affirmative action and other issues. I also think that the ADL has even denounced Jewish writers like Noam Chomsky and Norman Finkelstein who have been very critical of the Israeli government.

Necessary Illusions - by Noam Chomsky

"The ADL has virtually abandoned its earlier role as a civil rights organization, becoming "one of the main pillars" of Israeli propaganda in the U.S., as the Israeli press casually describes it, engaged in surveillance, blacklisting, compilation of FBI-style files circulated to adherents for the purpose of defamation, angry public responses to criticism of Israeli actions, and so on.

These efforts, buttressed by insinuations of anti-Semitism or direct accusations, are intended to deflect or undermine opposition to Israeli policies, including Israel's refusal, with U.S. support, to move towards a general political settlement."

Only meshuganahs take the ADL seriously.

That is most definitely true CR.

Here is a trailer great documentary about the ADL and Anti Semitism by Israeli filmmaker Yoav Shamir. It's not a polemic, but it certainly is an eye opener.

The only thing around here that's usually tainted with some sort of hate or underhanded comment is any post by John Del Signore. It's a good thing this amateur hack is best left to the confines of Gothamist, where grammar and punctuation hardly matter, let alone journalistic merit.

  • mns

Ooh JDS touched a nerve, joshuascurvydog!

Hey man - are you just pissed that the ADL is finally getting called out for being a proto-racist apologist for the Israeli right?

Or are you actually confused about the point of Gothamist? It's not a journalistic outfit, little man - it's a snarky and critical blog that reprints news items and does some entertainment/culinary reporting. And, insofar as these are its purposes, well Gothamist does a fine job.

So, don't be sad little joshpuppy! Shake the lulav, sniff the etrog, and then sit back and enjoy JDS's snark.
